AWE blind tasting - deep liquory black raspberry fruit, a touch of salame, touch hot, a touch briary, a little powdery limestone, nice oily herbs, a bit closed feeling, good density, a touch chewy, lurking freshness, a touch monolithic, a little bit inky, but rather light on its feet for that character, a touch of boysenberry , spicy fruit, intense and deep, a nice mineral cut on the backend, good length, more liquory fruit emerges on the backend, this will improve, 91-92
AWE blind tating - lots of ripe fruit, violets, a bit of coffee oak integrated with spicy black plum tones, lots of coffee, lean and crisp in the mouth with bitter mineral and earth tones, lots of almost plummy but not sweet fruit, a bit too much wood tannin, lacks a bit of detail but quite powerful with polished tannins and nice cut and focus, tannins turn a bit woody on the back end too but finishes with good length, 89-90
Light and airy while also intense with floral, earth, currant jam and light minor toast tones. A really lovely nose, very Nebbiolo and while tight shows great potential revealing soft notes of raspberry jam and wild cherry in alcohol with a subtle meaty underlay. A bit polished up front then round and rich if a touch soft. Real thrust to the herbal tinged red fruits on the palate with plenty of tannins, which are a touch rough, as is the style of the vintage, but still in balance. Lovely spice and purity to the fruit, which has a wild red raspberry, red currant astringency that is classic Nebbiolo. Floral in the mouth and on the long finish, which ends with a finale of menthol and bologna. A wine that will develop but is made in a subtle style not well suited to comparative tastings like this. 91pts
AWE blind tasting - a bit heavy and dull, sweet with integrated wood and some nice spicy herbal tones, a bit smoky wood, a bit loose, lacks some focus, a bit dried out but with some nice pie filling fruit, seems to be a bit too tannic across the mp, spicy eucalyptus/vegetal tones but not refreshing, a bit heavy and dull 82-83
AWE blind tasting - nice intensity herbal front loaded, spicy, gamy, bright red, lingonberry/cranberry, clay, tobacco, fresh, a little hops maybe, fresh and crisp, a touch dilute but still in balance, almost chewy, soft, ripe tannins, integrated acidity, bitter cherry fruit, almost a touch of hops in the mouth then liquory black raspberry fruit, a touch clay, a touch, sandalwood, black cherry finale, with a bit of spiciness, nice soil note on the return, 90-91
Showing cedar, roast coffee and strong incense aromas when popped and poured, air brings notes of a little sweet carob and earth with hints of mint. Good acids and dusty tannins are still obvious on the palate with focused flavors of fig and wild strawberry on the palate. This is tight and pretty classically structured with jellied cherry and orange emerging on the palate and lovely cherry fruit supported by some tightly packed and sweet wood tannins on the long finish. This looks older than it tastes and is still on the fruity side of its plateau thought it smells a bit more evolved while it still wears its oak quite obviously. 91pts
Dark and earthy on the nose with a top note of mineral oil floating over a base of dark carob-inflected cherry fruit. On the palate, this shows great depth and while the oak is obvious, becoming more so with air, there’s a fine base of tight, energetic if brooding dark black cherry and prune fruit here. A powerful wine that shows dry wood tannins on the back end and lacks some textural detail in the mouth, but does exhibit good medicinal and earthy detail topped with toasty oak spice. The finale does show a nice return of dried cherry fruit, opening the door to additional improvement in the bottle, though my gut tells me that this is more likely to fade away than to undergo any fundamental change in the bottle. 91 points

Four and a half glasses
The 1996 Vietti Barolo Rocche gave a classic Barolo performance on this evening. The nose was fresh yet powerful all at once with a cool refreshing quality, as floral notes of roses, then tar and leather, red fruits and dusty ash came forward. The palate showed well-defined red fruits against a stiff structure of silky tannin and acid, as flavors of licorice and hints of tobacco showed through. The finish was fresh yet still restrained. This bottle will benefit from another five-plus years in the cellar before really starting to strut its stuff. (94 points)

What a joy it is to taste the 2005 Barolo Lazzarito. A dramatic, large-scaled wine, the Lazzarito sweeps across the palate with awesome density and richness. Classic Serralunga notes of melted road tar, menthol, new leather, spices, plums and black cherries emerge from this breathtaking, powerful Barolo. Currado has backed off the French oak and gradually lengthened maceration times in this bottling which has resulted in a Barolo of uncommon elegance and transparency to site. Despite the wine s sheer opulence, the finish is long and fresh, with lingering notes of tobacco and autumn leaves, suggesting the Lazzarito has years of fine drinking ahead of it. This is a superb effort. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2035.
Dark in color, with a fabulous purity of fruit, from blackberry to blueberry. Full-bodied, showing awesome concentration, but with a finish that's beautiful and honest. Best after 2013. 430 cases made. Wine Spectator, Aug 31, 2009, James Suckling
Wine Advocate ReviewRated 90The 2005 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco reveals expressive aromatics and a lovely core of perfumed ripe fruit on a medium-bodied frame. The 2005 is made in the accessible style that is typical of the vintage, and I would choose to drink this wine before the 2004. It is an exceptional wine at this level. In recent years Currado has stepped up his commitment to the entry-level Barolo Castiglione by using a more stringent selection for that wine, which he views as a "multi grand-cru." Currado doesnt like the idea of a Barolo normale because he thinks it debases the wine, so he came up with Perbacco, which is made from the estates second selection of fruit from its multiple holdings across the region. It is given 23 months of oak aging prior to being bottled and released with just a few months of bottle age. It has all the hallmarks of a Barolo, but in miniature. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2012.Wine Tasting NotesPale ruby color with aromas of ripe cherries with hints of spice. With gripping tannins, fresh acidity, this Nebbiolo shows finesse, is well-balanced, integration and a lingering finish of rose petals.
Piedmont, ItalyVietti Barolo Castiglione is a wonderful expression of the Nebbiolo grape from Piedmont. Cantina Vietti was established in the 1880's by Mario Vietti, grandfather of current winery owner Luciana Vietti Currado. The family owns over 24 hectares of coveted vineyards and is among the most highly respected producers of Barolo and Barbera. Castiglione is a blend of five crus: Bussia, Ravera, Bricco del Fiasc, Meriondino and Fossati. Robert Parker calls it "one of the best values in Barolo." This Italian red wine gem received scores of 92 from both Parker and Wine Spectator and 91 from Tanzer. It is a superb wine from a great vintage!Vietti Barolo Castiglione is medium brick red in color with a nose of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, mocha, leather and floral notes. It is full in body with bright acidity, velvety tannins, and rich flavors of raspberries, cherries, anise, oak and spice. This big red will reward several years of cellaring and drink best from 2011-2019.
