Piedmont, ItalyVietti Barolo Castiglione is a wonderful expression of the Nebbiolo grape from Piedmont. Cantina Vietti was established in the 1880's by Mario Vietti, grandfather of current winery owner Luciana Vietti Currado. The family owns over 24 hectares of coveted vineyards and is among the most highly respected producers of Barolo and Barbera. Castiglione is a blend of five crus: Bussia, Ravera, Bricco del Fiasc, Meriondino and Fossati. Robert Parker calls it "one of the best values in Barolo." This Italian red wine gem received a 93-point score from Parker. It is a superb wine!Vietti Barolo Castiglione is medium brick red in color with a nose of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, mocha, leather and floral notes. It is full in body with bright acidity, velvety tannins, and rich flavors of raspberries, cherries, anise, oak and spice. This big red will reward several years of cellaring and drink best from 2012-2021. It is long, ripe and rich on the finish.Enjoy Vietti Barolo Castiglione with osso bucco, lasagna, veal chops and aged cheeses.
The 2006 Barolo Castiglione is frighteningly outstanding, it is Viettirsquo;s entry-level Barolo! There is incredible density and power in the glass as waves of fruit caress the palate with tons of richness. Sweet menthol, flowers and spices add complexity to the long, stupendous finish. In 2006 the Barolo Castiglione is a blend of fruit from Bricco Fiasco (except for the lower part of that plot), Ravera, Fossati and Bricco Ravera. The Barolo Castiglione is usually approachable pretty much upon release, but in 2006 the wine has so much fatness it will probably benefit from a few years in bottle. Barolo is never inexpensive, but the Castilione is as good a wine as readers will find for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2012ndash;2026.
A subtle, yet complex and perfumed nose, with flowers, plum and blackberry. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a polished texture. Delicately fruity and refined. More open than Viettirsquo;s big name single-vineyard Barolos. Best after 2010.
The 2007 Barolo Brunate is a stunner. Layers of dark fruit, mocha, chocolate, menthol, pine and spices emerge reluctantly from an inward, mysterious Barolo that captures the essence of one of Piedmont's greatest sites. Structurally, it remains a powerhouse, with massive tannins, great body and fabulous length. The Brunate is one of the most improved wines at Vietti over the last few years, and is a huge success in this vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032.
Vietti's iconic Barolo from the Brunate cru deserves a special spot in your cellar collection. The wine delivers power and heft thanks to ideal vineyard conditions in 2007. It also exhibits the vintner's unique style, in which oak tones are set against the delicate aromas associated with quality Nebbiolo.
A wine with a solid core of ripe berry fruit with cedar undertones. Full and chewy. Needs time to open. So much gorgeous fruit. Give it three to four years of bottle age. James Suckling. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 2007 Vietti Barolo Castiglione 750ml
