Nice nose, floral fresh rose, touch of herbs, soil, a bit of sour meat, poppy seeds, rich and supple, nice purity to the fruit but it’s a bit dull feeling, liquory, savory and deep, needs some time to pull itself together, lovely crisp tannins, nice fruit sweetness edge, good finish, nice power, should develop some elegance

The nose showed wild berries, undergrowth and spice with a feminine floral overtone. On the palate, I found rich dark fruits buried in a firm, tight structure of tannin and a lovely, long finish. This wine should be a beauty with a decade or two of cellaring.

The nose showed strawberry, anise, coconut and vanilla with a hint of lead pencil. On the palate, I found dusty cranberry and a hint of wood. The palate was rich with tones of darker fruit as it worked its way across the tongue. The finish showed a little rough tannin with dry red fruits. This wine is young, but not painfully so and with a little air showed the darker and richer tones of Nebbiolo.

Though on the linear side, this Barolo is full of sweet cherry, licorice, leather, savory herb and tobacco aromas and flavors. Dense and taut, showing a granular feel to the well-integrated tannins. This remains fresh and focused on the long, savory- and mineral-tinged finish. Best from 2016 through 2035.

The last wine of the flight is the outstanding 2006 Barolo Riserva Villero. It literally bursts open to full force intensity and beauty. It’s a mind-blowing interpretation of the often austere and brooding Nebbiolo grape that shows abundant life and vigor. Dark leather, cured beef, pressed rose petal, candied fruit, prune, cola, dried herbs and crushed mineral emerge from the glass like an aromatic marching band. Anticipated maturity: 2016–2035.

Viettirsquo;s 2004 Barolo Castiglione is superb. This impressively rich, concentrated Barolo is fresh and perfumed, with plenty of sweet fruit supported by awesome structure and power. With air delicate notes of herbs and tobacco emerge, adding further complexity. With this effort, the Castiglione bottling takes an important step in Curradorsquo;s plan to make this wine much closer in quality to his single-vineyard offerings. No longer the accessible easy going wine it once was, the 2004 is a big, big wine. The Castiglione is made from a variety of plots, many of which are too small to vinify separately for purely practical reasons. These include Bricco Fiasco, Ravera, Fossati, Bussia and Le Coste (Monforte). Anticipated maturity: 2010ndash;2022.

A subtle, yet complex and perfumed nose, with flowers, plum and blackberry. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a polished texture. Delicately fruity and refined. More open than Viettirsquo;s big name single-vineyard Barolos. Best after 2010.

The 2006 Barolo Castiglione is frighteningly outstanding, it is Viettirsquo;s entry-level Barolo! There is incredible density and power in the glass as waves of fruit caress the palate with tons of richness. Sweet menthol, flowers and spices add complexity to the long, stupendous finish. In 2006 the Barolo Castiglione is a blend of fruit from Bricco Fiasco (except for the lower part of that plot), Ravera, Fossati and Bricco Ravera. The Barolo Castiglione is usually approachable pretty much upon release, but in 2006 the wine has so much fatness it will probably benefit from a few years in bottle. Barolo is never inexpensive, but the Castilione is as good a wine as readers will find for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2012ndash;2026.

The 2007 Barolo Castiglione deftly balances the open, radiant personality of the vintage with considerable underlying structure. Warm, dense and full-bodied, the 2007 Barolo Castiglione flows effortlessly across the palate with generous fruit and fabulous overall balance. The wine was even better when I tasted it from bottle a few months later. It is another overachieving wine from Vietti and a bottle that is exceedingly fairly priced. Anticipated maturity: 2017ndash;2027.

Good full red. Reticent, pure nose menthol, licorice and brown spices. Suave and silky but at the same time juicy, delineated and deep, with lovely lift to the red fruits, spices and menthol. A round and complex wine finishing with broad, building tannins that coat the teeth. An impressive showing for this bottling.
