Editorial Reviews for Vietti Barolo Riserva Villero
The nose quickly turned things around! What a seductive nose, absolutely fresh with wonderfully ripe red cherry fruit, and soft subtle perfumes of herbs, flowers, menthol and sandalwood. In the mouth this saw simply silken elegance. The tannins are polished; they are like tiny buckyballs in the mouth forming a virtually seamless presence that tastily completely engulfs your mouth. There is lovely fruit and a huge rose element but that texture is phenomenal. I expect this to age rather slowly but I’m not sure it can get any better than it is now. 2009-2019 96pts
Tight on the nose with superb rose petal aromas over a base of candied raspberries, and wild cherry that have a light jammy edge to them. Some hints of buttery toast and and herbal hint of black currrant add further complexity. A bit tough and rather strict in the mouth, this is filled with mineral flavors layered over a base of dark cherry and black plum fruit with again a hint of the herbal currant like flavor. Tight, powerful and still youthful this finishes with great length and spicy, grippy tannins along with a wash of white soil tones. Still an infant, this is bound to improve. 93pts
This features a heavy nose of dark cherries in alcohol, macerated flowers, and hints of ash, playdoh, and integrated menthol notes. The fruit builds and dominates the aromatics. Silky on entry with really captivating integration and wonderfully fresh and succulent cherry fruit that is amply backed up with contrasting notes of licorice and earth. The tannins start to build on the mid-palate as the wine quickly takes on a more powerful feel. With time in the glass this gains focus and excellent length with a freshly cut fruit tone that lingers on the finale. This is super stuff, absolute classic and remarkably youthful. I would say give this another 3 to 5 years to catch it at peak. 94pts
A particularly fresh bottle of Villero, Vietti’s first from the Villero vineyard. This started out with a bit of evolved, cellar floor sandiness over the bright fruits and fine nuanced anise, salted caper and dried floral tones. This rolled across the palate with admirable density and perked up as the wine opened revealing a freshness that was irresistible. The finish grew in length as well and the darker, meaty fruits of the mid-palate yielded to dried cranberry and cherry tones with lovely spice tones. 92pts
The ’04 Villero Riserva was one of the most intense yet balanced young Baroli that I have ever tasted. The nose showed rich elegant cherries, medicinal herbs, sweet spices and a subtle sheen of vanilla. On the palate, pure red berry fruit gave way to tar and menthol as this elegant wine turned to a structure that coated the entire palate in silky tannin and staying red fruits until the long close.

Though on the linear side, this Barolo is full of sweet cherry, licorice, leather, savory herb and tobacco aromas and flavors. Dense and taut, showing a granular feel to the well-integrated tannins. This remains fresh and focused on the long, savory- and mineral-tinged finish. Best from 2016 through 2035.
The last wine of the flight is the outstanding 2006 Barolo Riserva Villero. It literally bursts open to full force intensity and beauty. It’s a mind-blowing interpretation of the often austere and brooding Nebbiolo grape that shows abundant life and vigor. Dark leather, cured beef, pressed rose petal, candied fruit, prune, cola, dried herbs and crushed mineral emerge from the glass like an aromatic marching band. Anticipated maturity: 2016–2035.
Smells enticing, exhibiting aromas of cherry and flowers that segue to the sweet spice, floral and tar aromas typical of a mature Barolo. The cherry flavor builds on the palate, backed by a stern structure. A touch austere on the finish now, with exc... Wine Spectator. Good bright red. Crushed cherry, dried flowers, minerals and menthol on the nose, complicated by spicy oak scents. Extremely tight, dry and penetrating, showing almost painful intensity today in spite of its velvety texture. Classic austere Barolo... Stephen Tanzers IWC.
