Vietti Barolo Lazzarito 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very complex on the nose and somewhat dark and muscular with aromas of pipe tobacco, plum, iron, dark turned earth and cut flowers showing excellent freshness and precision. In the mouth this is very rich with lot of fruit and a seamless texture. Rich with both power and delicacy, there’s gorgeous clarity on the palate to the big, dark strawberry fruit and earthy mineral flavors with hints of macerated flowers and licorice adding detail as this drifts off on the long finish which shows great energy and drive. The tannins here are very precise and offer great cut on the palate. As complete an example of Lazzarito as I’ve ever had. 94pts

This is tighter on the nose with wood that is a touch more obvious though fairly well integrated into the dark and earthy aromas of chalk and bitter medicinal herb roots that yield to lovely notes of dried roses, balsamic, strawberry fruit, necco wafers, and a touch of menthol. At first spicy, then a little soft on entry, if decidedly clear and firm on the full bodied mid-palate that is tannic but not weighty. There are lots of dark, earthy flavors here that lead to a big cherry in alcohol finish that is long, focused and full of lots of firm tannins all culminating in a hint of truffle on the finale. 92pts

The 2010 Barolo Lazzarito is impeccably polished silky and refined especially for a Serralunga Barolo. Mint violets black fruit smoke and deep layers of spices are some of the many notes that flesh out on the inviting textured finish. Today the Lazzarito is incredibly primary to the point of being raw and undeveloped but it is explosive bursting with energy and flat-out great. This is also the first recent vintage I can remember tasting where the French oak is more in line with the othe

Good full red. Musky strawberry pungent raspberry game and minerals on the enticing nose. Elegant silky and juicy with terrific cut and lift to the red berry and blood orange flavors. Showcases the energy of the 2010 vintage at its best; in fact this makes the 2009 Lazzarito seem almost raisiny by comparison. The juicy slowly mounting finish features suave tannins and a lingering suggestion of orange. This beauty is sexy already but has the spine to evolve positively in bottle for 15

A subtle combination of dried-berry tobacco and cedar character follows through to a full body with firm tannins and a fresh finish. Lovely layers. Better in 2015. James Suckling.

Good full red. Cherry, marzipan, chestnut and nutty oak on the nose. At once sweet and powerful, with excellent energy and power to the mineral and menthol flavors. Less refined than the Brunate but also mush less open to inspection today. The long, mounting finish conveys a strong impression of energy.

The 2006 Barolo Lazzarito has begun to show the pedigree of this great Serralunga site now that Vietti has backed off the French oak, and the 2006 is nothing short of superb. A melange of dark, mineral-infused fruit flows from the glass as the large-scaled Lazzarito shows off its class. Licorice, tar, smoke and earthiness add layers of complexity and nuance. The Lazzarito is still the Barolo that spends the longest number of months in French oak following the malolactic fermentation, but that period is down to several months from a full year the wine spent in small barrels up until 2001 or so. This huge, imposing Barolo will require patience, but it is nothing short of superb. Anticipated maturity: 2016andndash;2031.
