External Reviews for Vietti Barolo Castiglione
A meaty, dense style, packing plum and cherry flavors accented by tea and tobacco, this muscular red wears its burly tannins well, with enough sweet fruit for balance. Fine length. Best from 2015 through 2030.
The 2007 Barolo Castiglione deftly balances the open, radiant personality of the vintage with considerable underlying structure. Warm, dense and full-bodied, the 2007 Barolo Castiglione flows effortlessly across the palate with generous fruit and fabulous overall balance. The wine was even better when I tasted it from bottle a few months later. It is another overachieving wine from Vietti and a bottle that is exceedingly fairly priced. Anticipated maturity: 2017–2027.
With a deep berry essence in the aroma, this wine makes a firm statement at the beginning and end. In the middle, the volume of the tannins edges out the fruit, building both richness and tension. Give this a few years of bottle age to evolve.

Piedmont, ItalyVietti Barolo Castiglione is a wonderful expression of the Nebbiolo grape from Piedmont. Cantina Vietti was established in the 1880's by Mario Vietti, grandfather of current winery owner Luciana Vietti Currado. The family owns over 24 hectares of coveted vineyards and is among the most highly respected producers of Barolo and Barbera. Castiglione is a blend of five crus: Bussia, Ravera, Bricco del Fiasc, Meriondino and Fossati. Robert Parker calls it "one of the best values in Barolo." This Italian red wine gem received a 93-point score from Parker. It is a superb wine!Vietti Barolo Castiglione is medium brick red in color with a nose of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, mocha, leather and floral notes. It is full in body with bright acidity, velvety tannins, and rich flavors of raspberries, cherries, anise, oak and spice. This big red will reward several years of cellaring and drink best from 2012-2021. It is long, ripe and rich on the finish.Enjoy Vietti Barolo Castiglione with osso bucco, lasagna, veal chops and aged cheeses.
Winemaker's Notes:
Based in Castiglione Falletto in Piedmont's Langhe wine region, the Vietti winery is owned by the family'sfourth generation. In 1919 Mario Vietti made the first Vietti labeled wines. By mid-century Alfredo Curradomarried Mario's daughter and made a name for Vietti's single vineyard Barbera and Barolo. Alfredo wasone of the first to select and vinify grapes from single vineyards, a radical concept at the time. He also putthe varietal Arneis on the wine map and is recognized as the father of Arneis. In 1990, Luca Vietti joinedthe family business as winemaker after working at California's Simi Winery, Opus One, Long Vineyardsand Bordeaux's Mouton-Rothschild. His innovative winemaking utilizes a unique combination of themodern and traditional. He eliminated equipment that measures acid and tannin levels in favor of a moreintuitive approach. Vietti organically farms more than 25 single vineyards with vines up to 90 years of age.In 1970, the Viettis began an original artwork label program. This series was exhibited at New York'sMoMA in 1996. The last six editions have been dedicated entirely to the Villero Riserva Barolo.
