Vietti Barolo Castiglione 1985

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This features a heavy nose of dark cherries in alcohol, macerated flowers, and hints of ash, playdoh, and integrated menthol notes. The fruit builds and dominates the aromatics. Silky on entry with really captivating integration and wonderfully fresh and succulent cherry fruit that is amply backed up with contrasting notes of licorice and earth. The tannins start to build on the mid-palate as the wine quickly takes on a more powerful feel. With time in the glass this gains focus and excellent length with a freshly cut fruit tone that lingers on the finale. This is super stuff, absolute classic and remarkably youthful. I would say give this another 3 to 5 years to catch it at peak. 94pts

Since the presentation of the 1982 Barolo Villero in 1988, the artist’s labels have been dedicated exclusively to the wines grown on this great vineyard. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

More evolved color than the 82 and lighter this unfortunately is lightly corked but one can sense the almost sweet fruit on the nose that is joined by notes of forest floor, balsom, asphalt, and floral, minty tones. I passed this around the table anyway since it was not fatally corked. It showed a very beefy character with sweet tarriness and herbs over dark fruits. Round and opulent in the mouth with a finish of slightly liquory root notes. This should have been very good but an accurate assessment will have to wait for a correct bottle.
