Vidal-Fleury has a long history dating back to the 1700's. It was one of the wineries visited by Thomas Jefferson on his trip to France in 1787. Today they are considered one of the most consistent producers in the Rhone Valley. The Guigal family took over several years ago and have completely modernized the operation while still following traditional methods. A slow maceration is done for the the grapes in this Cotes du Rhone red. The blend is 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, 5% Carignan and others. Robert Parker said "The 2011 Cotes du Rhone may turn out to be as good, if not better(than the 2010), as it exhibits a darker color as well as more berry fruit, meat and pepper notes."

Slightly better, with more depth and length, the 2011 Cotes du Rhone (65% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 15% Mourvedre and other permitted varieties) exhibits attractive olive, licorice and plum nuances in a medium-bodied, nicely fruited and balanced package. It too is geared for near term drinking.

Ruby-red. Cherry, raspberry and peppery spices on the nose and in the mouth. Supple and open-knit, with a slight jamminess and a touch of licorice adding a bitter edge. Closes on a spicy note, with a bit of heat and no obvious tannins.
