Viansa Chardonnay Sonoma Valley 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Chardonnay can take many forms, from rich and luscious to light and crisp. At Viansa, we recognize that all styles have a purpose. Finding the perfect wine is more about your mood, or the food you’re serving, or the friends you’ve invited to join you. Our distinct vineyards make it possible for us to produce several Chardonnays, all noticeably different from each other. Our 2009 Chardonnay is bright and lively. It has aromas of apple, citrus, pear, and mild vanilla/oak spice and flavors of golden delicious apple with hints of citrus, pear, fig, melon, lemon curd and baking spices. This is a guaranteed people-pleaser that won a Bronze Medal in the Orange County Wine Competiton.

Two decades ago, Viansa's founders fell in love with the land where our winery now is built. They couldn't resist the softly rolling hills, and they marveled at the soil and climate that promised to produce extraordinary wine grapes. They also keenly felt the desire to restore the acreage on the property that once had been wetlands but which had been converted to grazing land. They also knew that because of their Italian heritage, another part of their dream would be to produce wines from Italian grape varieties. So it was natural for them to put their love of the land together with their ancestry and envision a Tuscan estate where wine, food and Italian traditions would be shared and celebrated in an unparalleled natural setting. It took time, but their vision began to take shape. They chose the highest spot on the property--the crest of a hill with far-reaching views of Sonoma Valley--as the site for the Italian-inspired villa. The hill also offered a variety of sun exposures, soils and degrees of slope for growing world-class wine grapes. They selected vineyard sites and began planting grapes and groves of olive trees. It’s no surprise that the climate in our vineyards shares many qualities with Alto-Adige, Tuscany and other winegrape growing regions of central and northern Italy. Work on restoring the wetlands took place along with creating the rest of the estate. Quickly - more quickly than imagined - the 90-acre preserve became home once again to native plants and wildlife. We take great pride in growing estate fruit as well as partnering with the best possible vineyard managers in Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley, Sonoma Mountain and Sonoma-Carneros to ensure the best quality California- and Italian-inspired wines. This was a nice clean wine that smelled of butter and spice. It was coarse and crisp and chewy in the mouth. With the taste of butter, the finish lasted a bit with acidity coming out more and more as it lingered.
