Intense, a bit raw and chewy, with firm tannins, but there's beautiful fruit. Rich currant, anise, earth, and leather, firming on the finish.
Against her father's advise, Argentina-born Delia Viader planted a steep, densely spaced 23-acre Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vineyard at a 1,200-foot elevation on Howell Mountain in 1987. Since the debut of her St.-Emilion-inspired blend in 1989, she has elevated Viader to one of the most sought-after California wines.
Bright ruby-red. Aromatic nose combines currant, black raspberry, violet, dark chocolate and sexy oak tones. Soft and appealing, with moderate density and firm acidity. Finishes with dusty, light tannins and very good length and grip. Slightly disjointed today, in need of a year or so to absorb its acidity.
This elegant, Bordeaux-styled blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Cabernet Franc boasts a deep ruby/purple-hued color as well as lovely aromas of smoke, plum, blueberries, and lead pencil shavings. Medium-bodied with sweet tannin, and a supple, approachable style, it should drink well for 10-12 years.
(Barrel tasting) A seductive, smooth and richly flavored wine, with layers of chocolate, black cherry, plum and spice. Long, complex aftertaste.
Very rich and distinctive, with spicy currant, leather, tobacco, cedar, and mocha aromas and complex, concentrated, earth, currant, spice and cedar flavors. Gains depth and nuance on the finish, where the flavors run deep and long. Tannins are firm and well-integrated. Drink now through 2012.
