Viader Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley Proprietary Red 1998
The 1998 Viader is an approachable wine with good fruit expression. Cabernet Franc particularly enhanced this vintage with it's great aromatics and bright black cherry fruit. Mountain grown wines tended to fare better in 1998 than on the valley floor -better angle of sun exposure allowed complete ripening. Approachable now, bottle aging will further develop bouquet and complexity. A wonderfully elegant mountain beauty!

This restrained 1998 (a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Cabernet Franc) recalls a Medoc claret. The wine unfolds gracefully on the palate to reveal flavors of black currants, tar, earth, creamy vanillin, and subtle oak. A medium to full-bodie... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar Review50% Petit Verdot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Red-ruby. Black cherry, flowers, iron and mint on the nose. Supple on entry, then less sweet in the middle than the proprietary blend; more backward and dominated by its structure. Light notes of meat and tobacco. Clings nicely on the back end, which offers notes of tobacco and black licorice. A sample of the petit verdot component of the '99 bottling showed more fully expressed, riper, more floral black fruit flavors, firm acidity and excellent length. Viader may yet add a pinch of this stuff to the cabernet blend "to add weight to the middle."
