Viader Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley Proprietary Red 1998

Member Review by VegasOenophile:

Brick red. Cocoa driven dark red fruit. This must not have had much acid in its youth as it's not maintained much structure in its 12 years. Tasty, but nothing special.

VIADER's vineyards and winery are located on the steep rocky slopes of Howell Mountain in the Napa Valley. While raising four children on her own, Argentine-born Delia Viader forged the vision and design for her unique estate vineyard property, wine blend and brand. Because of her dedication, persistence and insight, VIADER was recognized early on as a first growth property and the wines have been highly coveted since inception. She has earned the reputation as a pioneer for planting the vines running directly down the mountain, in a style normally found in Europe. After some initial criticism, the planting technique with its vertical trellises is now regarded as an ideal model for growing super-premium quality grapes. The original focus on Cabernet Franc as the main blending component was a natural homage to Delia's European roots and her love of Cheval Blanc. In the last few years, Delia's children have joined the business, making this a true family operation. Read less

This restrained 1998 (a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Cabernet Franc) recalls a Medoc claret. The wine unfolds gracefully on the palate to reveal flavors of black currants, tar, earth, creamy vanillin, and subtle oak. A medium to full-bodie... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Proprietary Blend wine from California in USA. 1998 Viader Vineyards Proprietary Red Wine 750ml

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar Review50% Petit Verdot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Red-ruby. Black cherry, flowers, iron and mint on the nose. Supple on entry, then less sweet in the middle than the proprietary blend; more backward and dominated by its structure. Light notes of meat and tobacco. Clings nicely on the back end, which offers notes of tobacco and black licorice. A sample of the petit verdot component of the '99 bottling showed more fully expressed, riper, more floral black fruit flavors, firm acidity and excellent length. Viader may yet add a pinch of this stuff to the cabernet blend "to add weight to the middle."
