What to Expect

Champagne is specifically a sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of France; every other sparkling is simply that, sparkling wine. Made to be aged for a few to many years, in many languages "Champagne" is synonymous with "party". When young, Champagne exhibits the fresh fruit tones of its "cepage", or blend. Usually based on a blend the features either Chardonnay or Pinot Noir as its main ingredient, Champagne's fruit can range from citrusy to orchard fruits and even red berries. The wine gains distinct yeasty notes from its secondary fermentation, the one that adds the fizz, which is typically described as recalling brioche or bread. As it ages Champagne tends to lose its obvious fruit, which is replaced by subtle nutty tones and subdued elements of dried fruits.

Winemakers Notes

Clicquot's signature brut non-vintage is loved the world over for its crisp, full flavors, consistent quality and celebratory yellow label. This classically-styled, dry Champagne is a blend of two-thirds black grapes (Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) for body, balanced with one-third Chardonnay for elegance. It has a fine persistent sparkle and golden Champagne color. Its complex nose of apple, citrus and caramel is followed by full flavors with elegance, crispness and a slightly spicy finish.

Reviews

A total package wine -- the fruit flavors, the surprising kick, the fantastic color and well integrated bubbles prove to me that this is a finely honed recipe. Perhaps my lack of interest in Champagne is the only reason this did not score higher in my book. Still, a fine wine for a fine New Year's celebration.

Nice golden colour, fine bubbles but for some reason don't seem to last to a 2nd glass. Sweet biscuit to start before a slightly sour kick finishes. For the price paid, a very good Champagne.

Rating: 17/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson Very big, bold rich. This burly wine positively demands attention. Probably best drunk with strongly flavoured food. Long.

A blend of about twenty Premiers and Grands Crus, the Vintage has the power of Pinot Noir, balanced by the finesse and elegance of Chardonnay. It is the perfect expression of the House style, proving that champagne can be a great wine and,as such, makes a perfect accompaniment for many dishes, developing its qualities as the years go by. It goes well with spiny lobster prawns, scallops and sea fish as well as poultry and white meat. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VINTAGE: A mild winter led to an early bud-break, and a hot month of May produced premature flowering. The first part of Summer had mixed weather, read more...
