Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Vintage Brut Champagne 3 .5 Litres 1995

Winemaker's Notes:

This is iconic Champagne from one of the most famous producers in the world. Madame Clicquot's relentless promotion of her product, coupled with her unerring ability to make fantastic vintage and non vintage Champagnes has elevated 'Veuve' into the premier league of sparkling wine production. The Wine Doctor writes of the Brut 1995: "A very pale, fine lemon-gold hue dotted with a very sparse but moderate sized bead. There is certainly some complexity and apparent maturity on the nose, nutty and a little mushroomy, although with a little confected, boiled sweet character in the background but it is a very minor component. The palate, however, is quite fine, with a vibrantly crisp mousse carrying along a lot of full, creamily mature autolytic flavours. There is a lot of rich, leesy character to it, quite a forceful flavour in fact, with a sappy, lingering acidity. Quite firm despite the maturing character and it would continue to do well in the cellar. Veuve Clicquot were certainly making some lovely wines back in the 1990s, so it is sad that recent efforts are not so admirable. From a 1995 Champagne tasting." 17+/20 (August 2007)

Founded in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is among the most prestigious Champagne Houses. Its extensive holdings, many originally purchased by Madame Clicquot, stretch throughout the top-rated areas of the Champagne region and are exceptional in size and quality. As in madame Clicquot's day, bottles age in the House's vast, vaulted cellars in Reims, portions of which were constructed some 2,000 years ago by the Romans. The remarkable Madame Clicquot (1777-1866) is considered one of the first business-women of the modern era. Widowed in 1805 at the age of 27, Madame Veuve Clicquot (born Ponsardin) defied every convention of the day to take the helm of her late husband's small Champagne House. She personally supervised cellar activities and introduced innovative production techniques still used today. Champagne Veuve Clicquot is known internationally for its classically styled and full-bodied Champagne. Read less

Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Elegant and harmonious, this tightly woven fabric displays its dough, citrus and floral nuances vividly. Not flamboyant, but has real class and length. Drink now through 2003.

Light orange color. Complex, spicy aromas of mandarin orange, strawberry and cappuccino. Very rich but fresh, with fairly dry, intense flavors framed by harmonious acidity. Notes of strawberry, apple and coffee. Finishes brisk and quite long. Seems both richer and finer than this producer’s ’93 release.

Dense and concentrated, this bubbly delivers its flavors on a racy profile, with plenty of intensity. Picks up a ginger note toward the finish. Drink now through 2008.
