Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Rare Vintage 1988

Winemaker's Notes:

Tasting Notes: The effervescence of the Rare Vintage 1988 is both delicate and long-lasting. The bouquet is fine and complex, strong in the aromas of dried fruits and flowers. There is an elegant harmony in the nose around toast and brioche notes. Composition: This Vintage is made up from twenty villages; all classified as Premiers or Grands Crus. They are located in the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims regions. 68% Pinot Noir 32% Chardonnay The Rare Vintage 1988 was disgorged in November 2005 after 17 years of cellaring at the Veuve Clicquot Maison. Occasion: Rare Vintage 1988 goes well with lobster, scallops and fish. After a few years of aging, the wine would go well with poultry and with meat dishes such as veal as well.

Founded in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is among the most prestigious Champagne Houses. Its extensive holdings, many originally purchased by Madame Clicquot, stretch throughout the top-rated areas of the Champagne region and are exceptional in size and quality. As in madame Clicquot's day, bottles age in the House's vast, vaulted cellars in Reims, portions of which were constructed some 2,000 years ago by the Romans. The remarkable Madame Clicquot (1777-1866) is considered one of the first business-women of the modern era. Widowed in 1805 at the age of 27, Madame Veuve Clicquot (born Ponsardin) defied every convention of the day to take the helm of her late husband's small Champagne House. She personally supervised cellar activities and introduced innovative production techniques still used today. Champagne Veuve Clicquot is known internationally for its classically styled and full-bodied Champagne. Read less

Has a fantastic nose of armagnac and brandy - really intense and intriguing. This is a powerful wine. Very crisp, clean and tart, with lemon flavors and a really racy finish. Very nice.

Tart lemony nose (lemon drops). Very sharp and precise. Yeasty nose. Less fruit than the Grand Dame wines it was tasted against (although it was 1/3 the cost). Very crisp, and tasted like a Chardonnay dominated blend, even though it was 70% Pinot Noir.

Razor sharp and crisp, this bubbly is heavy on the citric notes, but i felt pleasantly so. you just have to be in the mood for this type and taste. still, as mentioned earlier, this was less fruity than the Grande Dame, but for much much less cost...

A perfect vintage, you can tell right away that it's a vintage veuve, very similar to the Grand Dame '95. Lovely toast on the nose, with hints of dark fruits, and malt loaf, all of which follows through onto the taste. I could drink this all day.

This blend of 64% Pinot Noir and 36% Chardonnay is a transparent, pale gold, with extremely fine bubbles. Floral and mineral scents on the nose give way to aromas of sweet almond and candied fruit, then fine earth, herbs, and tobacco notes.
