Veuve Clicquot la Gr Dame 009234 Veuve Cliq Rose 88 1988

Winemaker's Notes:

LA GRANDE DAME ROSE 1988 THE VINTAGE This vintage is distinguished by its finesse and potential. The growing cycle went very smoothly throughout the year. Bud burst occurred during the last two weeks of April. The weather in May was very favorable sustaining the growth of the ensuing shoots. The ideal warm conditions permitted perfect flowering in the middle of June. Fruitset was excellent, with no shatter and very little millerandage (partial form of shatter), restricted to the Chardonnay grapes. The harvest began towards the end of September under very favorable weather conditions which ensured the grapes were matured, around 9° GL. Although sunny, the days remained cool, making it possible to maintain excellent acidity levels in the musts. At Bouzy, the vines reserved for making red wine were harvested on October 4. THE BLEND Only eight of the most prestigious Grands Crus in Champagne went into this cuvée. The frame is the same as for La Grande Dame 1988. This consists of 38% chardonnay from our vineyards at Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, in the Côte des Blancs region. The 62% of pinot noir comes from our best vineyards in the Montagne de Reims and the Grande Vallée de la Marne, from the villages of Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay, Bouzy and Ay. La Grande Dame Rosé 1988 is obtained by adding 13.3 % of red wine made entirely from pinot noir grown in the district of Bouzy. The grapes come exclusively from the Clos Colin, a block of old vines situated in the heart of this Grand Cru. ON THE SENSES… Pale pink in color, with golden hints, this champagne has a particularly fine bead. The bouquet displays very perceptible notes of red fruit, characteristic of Pinot Noir. After a few moments in the glass, the maturity and nobility of the wine become even more complex with creamy aromas and mineral nuances. On the palate, the first contact is a beautiful freshness, with tones of fresh fruit. This firmness subsides to make way for a supreme structure, which is the signature of the addition of the red wine. Elegance dominates the end of the palate where very pure aromas of dried fruit are found. The finesse and nobility of this great wine make it exceptional as an aperitif, which will be appreciated by the most demanding wine lovers. By virtue of its structure, this wine will also be a suitable accompaniment to certain dishes both refined and rich in flavor... It can also be left to age over many years....

Founded in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is among the most prestigious Champagne Houses. Its extensive holdings, many originally purchased by Madame Clicquot, stretch throughout the top-rated areas of the Champagne region and are exceptional in size and quality. As in madame Clicquot's day, bottles age in the House's vast, vaulted cellars in Reims, portions of which were constructed some 2,000 years ago by the Romans. The remarkable Madame Clicquot (1777-1866) is considered one of the first business-women of the modern era. Widowed in 1805 at the age of 27, Madame Veuve Clicquot (born Ponsardin) defied every convention of the day to take the helm of her late husband's small Champagne House. She personally supervised cellar activities and introduced innovative production techniques still used today. Champagne Veuve Clicquot is known internationally for its classically styled and full-bodied Champagne. Read less

Has a fantastic nose of armagnac and brandy - really intense and intriguing. This is a powerful wine. Very crisp, clean and tart, with lemon flavors and a really racy finish. Very nice.

Tart lemony nose (lemon drops). Very sharp and precise. Yeasty nose. Less fruit than the Grand Dame wines it was tasted against (although it was 1/3 the cost). Very crisp, and tasted like a Chardonnay dominated blend, even though it was 70% Pinot Noir.

Razor sharp and crisp, this bubbly is heavy on the citric notes, but i felt pleasantly so. you just have to be in the mood for this type and taste. still, as mentioned earlier, this was less fruity than the Grande Dame, but for much much less cost...

A perfect vintage, you can tell right away that it's a vintage veuve, very similar to the Grand Dame '95. Lovely toast on the nose, with hints of dark fruits, and malt loaf, all of which follows through onto the taste. I could drink this all day.

This blend of 64% Pinot Noir and 36% Chardonnay is a transparent, pale gold, with extremely fine bubbles. Floral and mineral scents on the nose give way to aromas of sweet almond and candied fruit, then fine earth, herbs, and tobacco notes.
