What to Expect

Champagne is specifically a sparkling wine made in the Champagne region of France; every other sparkling is simply that, sparkling wine. Made to be aged for a few to many years, in many languages "Champagne" is synonymous with "party". When young, Champagne exhibits the fresh fruit tones of its "cepage", or blend. Usually based on a blend the features either Chardonnay or Pinot Noir as its main ingredient, Champagne's fruit can range from citrusy to orchard fruits and even red berries. The wine gains distinct yeasty notes from its secondary fermentation, the one that adds the fizz, which is typically described as recalling brioche or bread. As it ages Champagne tends to lose its obvious fruit, which is replaced by subtle nutty tones and subdued elements of dried fruits.

Winemakers Notes

Tasting Notes: La Grande Dame 1998 was harvested in the ideal dry climate of September, developing aromas of flowers, minerals, candied fruits and sweet almond along with deeper notes such as tobacco, peaty malt and delicate herbs. La Grande Dame 1998, with its lace-like construction, has a long, lively, structured finish.

Composition: La Grande Dame was created by eight historic Grand Crus—the vineyards Madame Clicquot herself singled out as the best—including Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Ay, Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger.

ST: Light gold. Rich, smoky aromas of buttery pear, peach and smoked meat, complemented by exotic spice accents and a hint of white flowers; seems livelier on the nose than the deep, rich 1996 version. Weighty citrus and orchard fruit flavors are framed by juicy acids, and come across as a bit youthfully stunted right now. With air a note of poached pear emerged, along with a suggestion of toffeed hazelnut. Give this a few years.

Opened this one up for New Year's Eve with few choice friends. Veuve non-vintage is my favorite "every day" wine and there are a few taste notes that are similar (almonds/nuts, balance of citrus and herbs), but the vintage Grande Dame had a far greater richness and density in the mouth feel, less abruptness with the acidity, and greater complexity. I was sorry to see the last drop poured!

A superbly ripe Champagne that has all the open generosity of the 1998 vintage. Peach and apricot aromas are followed by flavors of hazelnuts, honey and spices. Of course, it is still very young, and, like all vintages of La Grande Dame, it will age ... Wine Enthusiast. Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame 1998 has a pale gold color with jade glints. The wine is crystal clear, with unbelievably fine bubbles. On the first nose, typical Chardonnay characteristics come to the fore, with the arrival of floral and mineral aromas

Very pale, almost lime green in color. A light yeast note with delicate apricot flavors, and a soft straw flavor. Crisp, yet intensely honeyed, and soft with a delicateness. A very finessed finish of figs, honey and apricot.
