Veuve Clicquot Brut Champagne Gold Label Vintage Réserve 2008

Member Review by steve1000:

I was away on vacation in South Beach where I did'nt know the lay of the wineland. I was excited enough to stumble upon a store that had something other than Korbel and a dusty bottle of Dom. This was the time to try a large brand standby from a recent good year: Veuve Cliquot's 2002 rose. I waver on rose Champagne. It costs extra, but it is highly variable from brand to brand and far too often not worth the additional cost. When I first popped the cork, it gave up a nice yeasty nose that was promising. I Pour. Nice color--more salmon than pink. Bubbles were plentiful, but not terribly fine. Closer to Soda than a mousse. Certainly not a ton of fruit in this wine, (from a vintage that otherwise is ripe and forward) but Veuve's style is more engineered than clean & clear anyway. I think the key here is taste--if you are a fan of Veuve, you will probably enjoy it, but I could not help but think there are quite a few bottles of grower Champagne I would prefer for the same price.

Founded in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is among the most prestigious Champagne Houses. Its extensive holdings, many originally purchased by Madame Clicquot, stretch throughout the top-rated areas of the Champagne region and are exceptional in size and quality. As in madame Clicquot's day, bottles age in the House's vast, vaulted cellars in Reims, portions of which were constructed some 2,000 years ago by the Romans. The remarkable Madame Clicquot (1777-1866) is considered one of the first business-women of the modern era. Widowed in 1805 at the age of 27, Madame Veuve Clicquot (born Ponsardin) defied every convention of the day to take the helm of her late husband's small Champagne House. She personally supervised cellar activities and introduced innovative production techniques still used today. Champagne Veuve Clicquot is known internationally for its classically styled and full-bodied Champagne. Read less

Pear and cherry aromas, with a slight yeastiness. Great acidity yet very smooth and very soft. Incredibly subtle, with great finesse. Beautiful. Finishes on delicate florals. Nice creaminess (strawberry cream) throughout.

I usually was not too crazy about La Grande Dame : too tasty, too woody, but this bottle of La Grande Dame 1996, drank more than 10 years after the harvest makes its point. Smooth, delicate, flowery with lightness but taste, it's a perfect aperitif to be enjoyed with good company. Nevertheless, I recommend trying to use sommelier Champagne glasses, to let this great champagne reveal to the senses all its promises...

Some yeast, soft and well aged. Excellent balance. Delicately floral with an extended finish. Absolutely delicious. Tasted at the New York Wine Experience

wonderfully crisp, clear, and dry. deep yet penetrating taste and finish, it's flavor has matured well and softened in its fruitiness, leaving a more nutty and grassy hint to it. excellent champagne.

This is the best Champagne I've had. You'll get quickly to the nutty/pear taste and a very deep and rich finish. I go back and forth between the 96 and the slightly less expensive 98. I prefer the 96 because it's just heavier and provides more of a Champagne experience.

This is firm and tight, with strawberry, red currant and spice aromas and flavors. Balanced and elegant, but needs time for all the elements to come together.

Wine Spectator ReviewFirm, rich and powerful, featuring dried berry, spice and citrus flavors. The structure is bracing, but there's plenty of substance, so enjoy it now with food or give it a few years to settle down. Drink now through 2012.

Weingut: Veuve ClicquotRegion: ChampagneRebsorte: 64% Pinot Noir, 36% ChardonnayInhalt: 0,75 l Champagner - Sekt - Prickelndes > Frankreich > Champagne

Deep ruby, loaded with the tiniest bubbles and filled with crushed red berry fruit. A rosé with real red wine character. A great companion to roast fowl or red meats.

Perfumed, showing pencil shavings, violet and berry notes allied to a firm, chalky profile. A little angular, but has character and good length. Drink now through 2012. -BS Wine Spectator. A Champagne Blend wine from Champagne in France. 1998 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Rose 750ml

Pale yellow with a steady bead. Orange, lemon, apple, smoky minerals and yeast on the nose. Fleshy orchard fruit flavors coat the palate and are energized by dusty minerals and a fresh jasmine quality. An energetic version of this bottling, with good finishing grip and lingering floral qualities. This gained weight with air: I’d hold off on popping the cork for at least another three years.

Listed by Veuve Clicquot itself as one of its rarest vintages, this champagne is known for its pale gold color and vivacious nose. Its flavor has a notable amount of mineral freshness and like its nose a floral sweetness. Though silky in one’s mouth, it finishes on a long and powerful note.
