Franc driven St. Emilion style. Earthy, rich cab franc nose. Hay, pencil shavings, earth, brush and herbs. Rhubarb, sassafrass, and toasty raspberry. - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 9/16/10
Nicely chewy as well, with a bit more minerality to the red fruit. This has an almost savory finish and is a bit more tannic than the ’01. No RS here at all.
Charred, smoky nose of cherry and red currant. Surprisingly smooth on the palate given the smoky nose. Nice acidity remains. Graphite and stone influence. - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 9/16/10
Pauillac style. Still has nice red berry. Earthy nose. Nice age on it, providing still exuberant fruit tones with good tannin integration. Nice herbal tones and spice. - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 9/16/10
Clearly, Mr. Parker and I have difference of opinion - as usual. This is a superb wine, eventually. The reality is that no matter how good a wine becomes, waiting for it to open up after being decanted for the better part of a day detracts from the wine. It is points against whatever "score" it may later merit. The wine is lovely. A rich dark red that is so inviting. The nose is as multi-layered as they come: Myrrh, berry, cherry, sandalwood. The mouthfeel is surprisingly light even though is does have mid-range acid. Another detractor from the total experience is the presence of just enough Brett to pass the interesting funk and enter into the disconcerting. Even more disconcerting when I hear that the wine is aged all in new French oak. Where does the brett come from?
I was trying to enter 4.5 glasses but for some reason couldn't get the site to cooperate. Although this could be a 5 glass rating some day. Right now I think 4.5 is more accurate. In case my full review did not make it when I submitted a few moments ago, I found this to be a very good wine with wonderful complex nose. The relationship to the terroir is unmistakable in my view and is the closest thing to a French style Bordeaux that I have had from California. I do think that this wine will benefit from additional cellaring time. The alcohol was a little forward for me and I think this will mellow out in time. This is a very enjoyable wine now, but I think a few more years and it will be better. There are so many things going on with the flavors that it is a joy to taste it over a prolonged period of time. I did not have any food while I drank it as I wanted to just have the wine. There is little question that this wine would go well with a filet or a prime rib and even a veal dish. You just have to smile drinking this wine. It is what I think wine is about. I recommend.

How much fun collectors will have comparing the 2007 and 2008 La Joies over the next three decades. A blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon 14% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc Petit Verdot and Malbec (48% from Alexander Valley Mountain Estate 34% from Chalk Hill and 18% from Knight s Valley) the 2008 has similar technical numbers to the 2007 (a pH of 3.68 and 14.4% alcohol). Wonderful notes of roasted herbs asphalt black truffles blackberries cassis camphor and subtle oak are present in the majestic aromatics. In the mouth the wine is extraordinarily concentrated pure and dense with amazing length. It is another 30-40 year wine that confirms the confidence the late Jess Jackson had in both his vineyard sources and his winemaker Pierre Seillan. Robert Parker Jr. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
The fruit for this blend of 61% Cabernet Franc, 31% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec came from Chalk Hill (58%) and Alexander Valley (42%). Full medium ruby. Superripe aromas of chocolate, leather, gunflint, coffee and menthol. Sweet, large-scaled and superripe, with a sappy freshness for such a lush, rich wine. Finishes very long and aromatic, with the tannins nicely supported by the wine's huge material. Winemaker Seillan considers the young 2002 to be more elegant than the 2001.
Good deep red-ruby. Complex aromas of cherry, plum, musky brown spices, licorice and menthol lifted by a floral topnote. Quite dry and youthfully imploded initially, then opened to show a creamy sweetness and growing pliancy to its red fruit and mineral flavors. This has firmed up since I saw it in barrel a year ago, while La Joie has become more harmonious. The most tannic of this outstanding trio of 2007s today, with the structure for a long and positive evolution in bottle.
With supple fruit and spice, exceptional balance and impressive length, Vérité La Muse is crafted primarily from Merlot. From its inception, every vintage of this special wine – which honors the style of the great wines of Pomerol while celebrating the quality of our world-class fruit grown in Sonoma County — has received outstanding critical acclaim.
