Verite La Joie(2002)

French for "joy", La Joie emphasizes Cabernet Sauvignon and represents a Pauillac-style wine. The wine is deep purple in color, spicy and intense in the nose, with density and structure from its Cabernet Sauvignon dominance.

A saturated dense purple color emerges from the 2002 La Joie. A blend of 75.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.8% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc, it offers up smoky, sweet scents of lead pencil shavings, cedar, spice box, volcanic earth, black currants, and smoke. With excellent fruit, full-bodied power, a layered texture, and an exceptionally long finish, read more...

The full-bodied, classically-styled, Bordeaux-like 2002 La Joie's (64.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28.5% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and .3% Malbec) deep ruby/purple color is followed by gorgeous aromas of black truffles, scorched earth, tobacco leaves, blackberry and cassis liqueur, and notions of minerals as well as acacia flowers. This stunning red can be drunk in 2-3 years, or cellared for two decades.

($150; 68% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot and 12% cabernet franc) Bright ruby-red. Blackberry, licorice and mocha on the nose. Densely packed and juicy, with sharply delineated dark berry and floral flavors. Large-scaled but light on its feet owing to its lovely lift. Serious, gripping wine with a long, bright finish.

Clearly, Mr. Parker and I have difference of opinion - as usual. This is a superb wine, eventually. The reality is that no matter how good a wine becomes, waiting for it to open up after being decanted for the better part of a day detracts from the wine. It is points against whatever "score" it may later merit.

The wine is lovely. A rich dark red that is so inviting. The nose is as multi-layered as they come: Myrrh, berry, cherry, sandalwood. The mouthfeel is surprisingly light even though is does have mid-range acid. Another detractor from the total experience is the presence of just enough read more...
