A deep purple, garnet interesting blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Carmenère. Smoke, oak, dark berry fruit, some pepper, spice and some earthiness with nice lush mouth-filling tannins. Well balanced, but let it breath for a half hour in glass. Ready now, but this one will cellar nicely. Under 20 bucks from SPECS.

I've had corked wines, wines with zero nose, wines with zero taste, but never a wine that smelled like dirty socks in a high school gym locker. I'd be careful on this one.

What's New in Booze - 9.1 out of 10 The Veramonte Primus is a blend of Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The best grapes from the top vineyard parcels are carefully sorted, destemmed, and fermented separately before blending and aging for 2 years in French Oak barrels, about 50% of which are new each year. This dark ruby red wine has aromas of chocolate, cherry and vanilla followed by a palate that seems to burst in your mouth with flavors of chocolate covered cherries summed up by a dusty tannic finish.

Midnight blueberry, dark color. Enticing, aromatic, plummy bouquet with rich extracted fruit and a subtle clove spice. Unctuous, young, bright fruit on a respectable finish. Break out the yum, yum recording, this Chilean red is so good.

Round and fleshy, with currant and plum fruit and bacony smoke lying over herb and pepper hints. Nice lingering finish. Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2004.

Subtle smoke weaves through the polished plum and blackberry flavors. Sweet, medium-weight and fleshy texture and juicy finish. Delicious. Good to see this wine living up to expectations. 60 percent Carmenère, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2003.

Vivid ruby. Pungent aromas of redcurrant, cherry, mint and cedar. Juicy and high-pitched, with brisk acidity adding cut to the zesty red fruit flavors. Youthfully closed today but conveys an impression of finesse and balance. Finishes with lingering cherry and mint notes.

Primus is a racy blend of Carmenère, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon made from the highest quality grapes at the Veramonte estate. It showcases the Carmenère, a distinctive grape that has found its home in Chile. Spicy red and dark fruits flow through the wine with a touch of gentle tannin and oak.

This red is based on Carmenère, a rare old Bordeaux grape that was widely planted there in the 1700s and is currently undergoing a revival in Chile. Rich yet elegant, this full-bodied wine from Franciscan Estates' excellent new Chilean property is a top-notch find, and enough to convert anyone who hasn't yet discovered the glories of Chilean wine.

Ripe and smoky, with dark plum, tobacco and cocoa notes followed by plenty of bacony toast on the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenere. Drink now through 2007.
