Veramonte Merlot Valle del Maule 2013

Member Review by JBaldwinRN:

84 points: 1st Night: Decanted for 2 hours. I actually think it was served too cold. The room was very cold due to a cold spell that swept across New England. The reason I think this was the nose was SOOOOO subdued for a Merlot. It almost had nothing on the nose at all, I was quite surprised. First taste was also quite bland, so I won't even finish this note....(see second night's tasting). 2nd Night: Was already decanted yesterday. Also, the bottle was moved to a different (warmer room) and definitely made a difference. It has a beautiful dark, nearly opaque maroon color. On the nose; some dark cherry, black licorice and a hint of smoke. I actually lost a lot on the palate however. It takes a steep dive in taste compared to it's nose. It was very one-dimensional unfortunately. Some bittersweet chocolate initially, some smoke and some hints of dark fruits (though I can't pinpoint which ones, sorry). The black licorice from the nose peeks through in the mid-palate. It has a very weak finish. It ends in about 10 seconds and finishes very bitter for the last 5 seconds. Overall: You know, for the price point, you can't really complain I suppose. I only paid $9 for this Merlot and to be honest, I have had worse Merlot's for twice as much cash. Would I buy this one again though? Probably not, I would prefer to spend the cash on a Ribera Del Duero.
