The 2001 Rosso Piceno Roggio dei Filari is the pace-setter in the Rosso Piceno appellation, very lush and opulent in the jammy, chocolate-laced plum fruit of its nose, its ample and voluminous palate, superior depth and definition, and warm, firm finish. It will drink well for over a dozen more years.
Rich and dense, with loads of mineral, berry and light vanilla character. Full-bodied, with firm, chewy tannins and a medium finish. Slightly tight but with good structure and acidity. Montepulciano and Sangiovese. Best after 2006.
Dense concentration and oak-driven aromas of spice, blackberry, chocolate fudge and espresso this thick Montepulciano (70%) and Sangiovese blend (packaged in an equally imposing and heavy glass bottle). The wine is plush, dense, sweet and would pair with roast pork and broad beans.
Inky ruby. The nose is a step up in concentration from the Brecciarolo, projecting and austere but profound quality to the aromas of decadently ripe black cherry, grilled meat, blood and minerals. Fat, layered and sweet, with smoky black pepper and raspberry liqueur notes, this huge wine offers surprising mid-palate delineation of flavor for its outsized ripeness. Finishes with fine acids, chewy ripe tannins, and very good grip.
The 2009 Rosso Piceno Superiore Roggio del Filare opens with warm, toasty aromas that recall sweet cinnamon rolls baking in the oven. This spiced, jammy red reveals lovely finesse and silky tannins, but a touch less oak might allow the appealing vibrancy of the fruit to shine through with even more clarity. This is another gorgeous red from Velenosi. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2015. These are the finest wines I have tasted from Velenosi, and emerging producer in the Marche that is very close to making a huge jump in the overall quality of their wines.
