Vega Sicilia 'Valbuena 5 Ano' Tempranillo 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This bottle had a very poor cork so it was not surprising that it showed a touch advanced but none-the -less this had a wonderful nose of leather, spice, dark, rich fruit and an earthy, gamey tang. In the mouth this showed good resolution but with particularly fine balance. It started out reticently but really developed over the several hours it was opened gaining a bit more mid-palate richness and depth of sweet, ripe fruit on the back end that lead to a long, layered finish. A real sense of finesse and elegance, much more so that with the last bottle. Certainly drinking well but with a very long life ahead 2008-2025

full dark color, makes me think of bulls blood. Stinky right out of the bottle, leathery with dark cherry and earth, minerally, shale, a hint of citrus, super sweet wood notes, a bit of carob, and a seductive cough drop note. very complex and dynamic nose. This is showing a bit more elegantly than previous bottles, perfectly integrated, a muscular dancer, earthy fresh fruit in the mouth with very vibrant red fruits, tightly coiled strawberries on the finish which is richly minerally and delicately tobacco tinged. A consistently great bottle of wine.

One of the 3 best wines I've ever tried. Rich and structured. Shows basically 3 layers ( but each one much more complex in itself than I am able to descibe): fruits (dark and wild fruits), vanilla and details from time in wood, and special details such as the exquisite animal smell. Although expensive, it is more than worthwhile.

Nose is smokey with a light minerals but overall quite closed. Watery in the mouth with cherry and thin earth. Really can't say this is representative. Out of all the wines served at the Salon de los Mejores, we were given a small if non exsistent sample of this wine, and then ignored. Really a disappointment and I hope to try this one day in a proper setting. 2.5/5 [NR]

My ancestors are Spaniards, so when I saw this renowned wine from Ribera del Duoro, I had to purchase it for tasting. I was disappointed. It was nothing to jump up and down about. I wish I would have spent the $100+ price on a $30 more enjoyable Temparnillo or something more enjoyable. The color was Dark Purple, the nose of rose petals, the taste was Floral violets, chalky, slightly acidic, leathery. The finish coated my mouth but on a scale if 10 I would only give this wine a 6. Compare that rating with the high price (which I have paid for other wines) this 1o year old Valbuena was disappointing.

Leuchtendes Rubin. Tiefgründige Nase, Edelkirschen und reife Pflaumen. Feingliedrige Textur im saftigen Gaumen. Grossartige Balance auch in der Mitte. Sanfter Gaumendruck bis ins seidig-weiche Finale. Ein burgundischer Unico mit grossem Potenzial.

The 1998 Unico is purple-colored with a complex bouquet of wood smoke, violets, Asian spices, mineral, blueberry, and assorted black fruits.

Tempranillo, which comprises between 65% and 80% of "Unico" has a structure that seems to defy oxidation. Blended with a small portion of Cabernet, this Tempranillo gives intense black fruit and leather aromas. The texture is legendarily supple due to extensive oak aging. (10-25 years!)
