Varnier-Fanniere Brut Champagne NV

Member Review by zufrieden:

This is a difficult call: the wine has all the markings of a fine Champagne with excellent effervescence (lengthy and continuous, I mean), brioche nose and buttered toast on both palate and olfactory bulb(s). I acquired this wine at a considerable discount that might embarrass the BC Liquor Distribution Branch, but that is their deserved loss. I like the sweet honey associated with the toast (and butter) and can only recommend this wine to the astute buyer. If in BC, buy at least a case if you enjoy Chardonnay-based Champagne.

Champagne Varnier-Fannière:
The FANNIERE Family started growing grapes in 1860. At this time, wine growers were selling all there grapes to the Champagne négociant house because they did not (and still do not) have enough vineyards of their own to produce the quantity of wine they needed to sell all around the world. The grapes from the most famous villages (Grand Cru) like Avize were the most sought after and were often used to produce the Cuvees de Prestiges.

Exotic aromas of lavender and sandalwood in this distinctive, elegant Champagne. It’s racy and tightly wound at this stage, so give it a few months or a year in the bottle. Drink now through 2005.

Has plenty of personality. Light-weight and lively, featuring apple, juniper and vanilla notes. Lingers lazily on the finish, with an aftertaste of vanilla and hazelnut. Drink now.
