Varner Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains Spring Ridge Vineyard Home Block 2005

Member Review by cagney:

Definitely California style. Creamy and buttery, but not too oaky. Makes it easy to drink, by itself even.

Tangerine oil, lemon zest, and tropical fruits are present in the 2005 Chardonnay Home Vineyard. From a relatively old Chardonnay vineyard planted in 1980 on its own roots, the wine is full-bodied, has terrific minerality, good acidity, and fabulous concentration and length. This wine should age nicely for 7-10 years.

The Burgundian styled cuvees of Chardonnay, which are all barrel-fermented with about 40% or so of new oak and virtually all made from old Wente clones of Chardonnay, include the Batard-Montrachet-like 2005 Chardonnay Ampitheater Block. A big honeysuckle nose intermixed with poached pears, lemon butter and some subtle wood is followed by a wine of terrific intensity, beautiful texture, full body, and terrific underlying acidity and minerality. This is a beauty to drink over the next 4-6 years.

Playing it closer to the vest, the 2005 Chardonnay Bee Block shows notes of crushed rock, white currants, flowers, sweet corn, dried pit fruits, and some honeyed apricot. The wine is rich, very dry, but full-bodied with a slightly austere mineral-laced finish. It should drink nicely for 7-8 years.

The Bee Block from Varner is a bottling of the youngest Chardonnay vines, and subsequently, the wine sees more new oak. A slightly fatter, richer style is achieved, with notes of peach, honeysuckle, and citrus. The wines are hand-racked and are bottled unfiltered.
