Van Duzer Pinot Noir Flagpole Block 2009

External Review:

Firm, with a sweet undercurrent of nicely focused blueberry, currant and vanilla spice aromas and flavors that persists appealingly against fine tannins. Best from 2007 through 2012.

Van Duzer Vineyards is the first in the Willamette Valley to benefit from the cool Pacific breezes that flow nightly through the Van Duzer Corridor to the interior of the valley. The Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris planted on the vineyards in the foothills of the Van Duzer Corridor flourish in the cool-weather growing conditions where they develop a purity of fruit flavor, complexity and pleasing balance. Located on a scenic hilltop amidst 82 acres of vines, the family estate winery practices sustainable farming and has been endorsed by internationally recognized LIVE (Low Impact Viticulture and Enology) and Salmon Safe. Pinot Noir is Van Duzer’s signature wine. A variety of Pinot Noir clonal varieties and microclimates allows Van Duzer Vineyards to produce a multi-dimensional estate Pinot Noir and a handful of limited-production Block Designates of singular personality. Pinot Gris is Oregon’s other wine of note, a white wine that Van Duzer Vineyards makes in a crisp, dry style particularly well suited to a white wine. Van Duzer Vineyard’s new eco-friendly winery is one of the most modern winemaking facilities in Oregon. Tasting room and picnic grounds welcome visitors to the site, located just one hour south of Portland on the Hwy 99W Wine Road. Read less

A swirl of the glass suggests blackberry pie, followed moments later by a bouquet of fresh earthiness, cedar, cinnamon and clove, cocoa, fresh truffle and mushroom that is typical of the Wädenswil vines planted in the Flagpole Block. On the palate, ripe blackberry and dried blueberry are accompanied by graham, spice and dark chocolate. The very ripe flavors assume weight in the mid-palate and finish with an impression of chocolate-raspberry truffle.

Dark red. Deep blackberry and cassis aromas are distinctly ripe, with exotic Asian spice notes adding complexity. Darker, liqueur-like kirsch and bitter chocolate flavors on the palate, with supple tannins and an earthy tobacco quality carrying through the finish. More weighty and serious than the Dijon Blocks; this will pair nicely with grilled lamb or aged beef.
