Valley of the Moon Pinot Noir 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The grapes for this wine are sourced from the historic Mulas Ranch in the rolling hills of the Sonoma Carneros region. The proximity to San Pablo Bay assures moderate daytime temperatures, providing a slow and gentle ripening period for these delicate grapes. Various Pinot Noir clones are harvested from different blocks in the vineyard to bring blending options and complexity to the final blend. Once the Carneros blend is assembled, we introduce a small percentage of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir for added layers of aromas and flavors. The 2009 vintage also includes a splash of Sonoma Valley Syrah for added depth and structure. The wines are put to barrel early and aged ten months in French and Eastern European oak.

In 1997 the winery was transformed into a contemporary winemaking facility; still the original heritage was preserved. Valley of the Moon Winery, as it exsists today, is a testament to both vision and rebirth. The history and old walls remain, but the technology and styling is resolutely modern. This harmonious marriage of past and present provides the perfect environment to craft world-class wines. www.valleyofthemoonwinery.com Read less

This is very fresh on the nose with a distinctly citrus fruitiness over bright, sweet, fresh red cherry and red currant fruit. There’s a gentle herbal tone as well, but this is really about very light astringent red fruits and that orangey backdrop. Soft and medium-bodied in the mouth, with flavors that mirror the aromas, edged in blood-orange and rich with Frutti di Bosco flavors. There’s a light herbal element as well that adds complexity to this fresh, zesty wine. Love the texture and the freshness of the fruit here. Not a typical Pinot Noir, but maybe this should be! 89pts
