Colome was farmed for thousand of years by the native population who were excellent stewards of the land. The original Indio language in Ihe Cakhaqul Valley was "Kakan"; but at the end of the 15th century the Incas entered the valley. Since then, the dialect spoken in the valley has been "Quechua". In 1549, Calchaqui Valley was first occupied by the Spanish conquistadores but they encountered stiff resistance from the native population. 90 years later the Spanish succeeded expropriating the native population. As the tale goes, the native tribe chief Colomln received vines from the Spanish conquistadores in the late 16th century for good services rendered. The old Colomi winery was founded in 1831. probably by the Spanish Governor of Salta, Nicolas Severo de Isasmendi y Echalar. His daughter Ascencion, who married Jose Benjamin Davalos, introduced in 1854 from France pre-phylloxera Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon wines to Colome. Three vineyards of 10 acres/ 4 hectares, dating from this time still produce grapes. Colome is considered the oldest existing winery in Argentina. Read less

I took a bottle of this wine to a recent party and it got excellent reviews from all my friends. If you want to show off some good wine that is outside the California/Australia paradigm, check this one out while you can.

I shared a bottle of this at Taranta in Boston, it was highly recommended by the staff. We would agree that this wine is outstanding, well structured and at 15% Alcohol it packs a whallop so needs to breath. Doesn't appear to be available in Canada. Strangely, I did not realize that the Amalaya was from Colome, not sure if same vintner? The Amalya De Colome 2007 is a current fave of mine (bought a case in Kelowna, BC)

Full red-ruby. Musky aromas of cherry liqueur, blackberry, violet, roasted coffee and spicy herbs, along with a meaty whiff of reduction. Wonderfully fine-grained and plush on the palate but with no heaviness; perfectly integrated acidity gives the wine a vibrant quality. Finishes with serious but sweet tannins that spread out to coat the palate on the lively, subtle, long aftertaste. A lot of wine for $30.

This suave, racy red delivers game, crushed cherry and wild berry notes backed by fine tannins and bright acidity. Compact, yet creamy and well-balanced, with a long, savory finish. Drink now through 2018.

Bodega Colome in the Calchaqui Valley, 7500 feet above sea level, was founded in 1831 and is one of the oldest existing wineries in Argentina. Since its acquisition by the Hess family in 2001 the quality of wines has skyrocketed. All the vineyards are farmed biodynamically with a focus on low yields and high quality. Winemaking is state-of-the-art with an emphasis on grape expression as is clear in this Estate Malbec. Blended with small amounts of Cabernet, Tannat, Syrah and Petit Verdot, it was aged for 15 months in French oak barrels. With 90 scores above scores all around, the Wine Spectator scored it 91 saying "This suave, racy red delivers game, crushed cherry and wild berry notes backed by fine tannins and bright acidity. Compact, yet creamy and well-balanced, with a long, savory finish."

Offers good density to the blueberry, raspberry and blackberry coulis flavors that are backed by vibrant acidity. Floral and mineral notes play out on the long, tangy finish.
