Vale la Pena Malbec 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Vale la Pena is a single vineyard malbec, a pure expression of a place. It is also a true Reserve wine, meaning that is an exceptional wine from an exceptional vintage: a wine that stands apart from the rest. Our first two Vale la Penas, the 2001 and 2002, were grown in the southern area of La Consulta. Like the vineyard, that is nestled on a relatively fertile, fruit-growing zone at around 950 meters, the 2001 and 2002 VLPs reflected their origin: generous, exotic, and very perfumed. We began farming what has now become our top vineyard in 2003. This 60 year old vineyard is situated outside of the pueblo of San Carlos, some thirty kilometers south of La Consulta, and is virtually the southernmost vineyard in all Mendoza. It lies at 1050 meters of elevation in the rocky, sparse, big-sky plains at the foot of the Andes. On a windy day you can almost smell the dry, cool Patagonian scrub brush and minerals on the breeze as it blows up from Patagonia across hundreds of kilometers of desert and encounters our Vale la Pena vineyard. 2003 was a fine vintage, but we decided to put all the potential VLP into Terra Rosa, which is why the 2003 TR displays that rich core of complexity. The 2004 Vale la Pena is a pure reflection of the vineyard: intense, dramatic, and big-shouldered, full with mineral notes, and deeply focused. This is a truly exceptional wine: ultra-dark, with highly refined flavors of black fruits, tar, molasses, and citrus notes; it is very large-scaled, and after a few minutes in the glass it displays a round and amazingly long, complex finish. For all its boldness, it remains opulent and inviting. Bring on the steaks!!
