Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano Sangiovese Grosso Wine 1998

Winemaker's Notes:

Tasting Notes: Vincenzo Abruzzesi is Montalcino’s number one over-achiever with winner after winner since 1988. The secret – a willingness, indeed eagerness, to spend whatever it takes for quality in addition to utilizing several of Italy’s outstanding consultants, winemaker Attilio Pagli and agronomist Andrea Paoletti (the former Antinori vineyard manager). Pagli is unfortunately little known to the larger public, but no oenologist in Italy has made so many excellent wines since the mid-1980’s.

Here in Montalcino the opulence of the Sangiovese grape, more than any other place in Tuscany, has lead to a darker, deeper, and more concentrated wine. At our precise latitude of 43 degrees, the warmth of the nearby Tirrean Sea, the protective barrier of the "Monte Amiata", the coolness of the wooded areas, the breeze and moderate rainfall all coincide to facilitate the growth of these grapes to fragrant, full maturity. VALDICAVA is located in the Montosoli area which is famous in Montalcino for creating wines with great balance of body and aromas. We pay the utmost attention towards maintaining the individual characteristics of our wines in order to exalt the spirit of the place, the 'genius loci' of our estate. Read less

Dissappointing. Barnyard on the nose with a green quality on the palate. Lack fruit and structure

The 1998 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a single-vineyard wine very fine but from a good instead of an excellent vintage. The nose though powerful is more mineral and herbaceous and though there are size and concentration to spare on the palate the quality of the extraction and tannins is not at the level of the outstanding vintage which followed. But the weight and grip on the finish are impressive. Drink: 2006-2017. Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.

The secret – a willingness, indeed eagerness, to spend whatever it takes for quality in addition to utilizing several of Italy’s outstanding consultants, winemaker Attilio Pagli and agronomist Andrea Paoletti (the former Antinori vineyard manager).
