Valckenberg Undone Pinot Noir 2008
Different style than what I'm used to in a pinot noir. This is 100% pinot, unoaked, fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. Color is light ruby. The nose is quite nice. Some floral notes and a ton of ripe red berries. On the palate it's a quite fruity wine, not what I'd call a fruit bomb but the red raspberry and plum notes steal the show. The alcohol comes through a bit too much for me and did not diminish even with a good decanting so that was a bit of a disappointment. Finish is crisp but with a touch of heat. Only very slightly off balance between the flavor profile and the alcohol but overall a decent wine for the price, especially for those out there that want to try something just a little different. All in all, I actually kind of liked it. I wouldn't buy a case of the stuff but I may keep a bottle in the cellar. I do want to reiterate that the nose on this is wonderful. I could sit there just smelling this wine for an hour before taking a sip. If not for that I might give it a lower rating. Really nice bouquet, so-so on the palate and finish. 3 glass rating.
