Gewurztraminer is one of the world's most unique grape varietals, yet most everyone seems to be afraid of it! I think the name alone scares some people away. The grape is originally from Tramin, in Northern Italy. When it moved North to Germany, the Germans tacked Gewurz on the front of the name--meaning spice. Therefore, the grape is the spicy grape of Tramin. This does have spice notes--think nutmeg, clove, cardamom and the like. Some Gewurz can be too sweet for all palates.
