V. Sattui Winery Syrah North Coast 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is very focused on the nose with juniper, smoke, wood spice and minor notes of reduction, along with a little alcoholic burn. A bit soft in the mouth, this is broad and, well, soft. It’s flannelly and almost silky in its softness, and I have to admit, this is an appealing texture, though it may make the wine a challenge to pair with food. The fruit is fairly intensely wild berried, with a base of toasty spice adding complexity and a little juniper on the edges. Primarily fruit-driven. The finish reveals formidable tannins that really clamp down, allowing just a hint of fruit to emerge on the finale. A nice wine if a bit big, sweetly fruited and perhaps too smooth. 88pts

Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.

It's scary how consistently great their wines are. This one chimes in with all the usual fruit and perfect amount of spice. Awesome.

A real treasure. You have to buy this wine direct from the winery. Fruit forward, pleasing from beginning to end. It's what most Syrahs are striving to become when they grow up. Save some for me.

I set this up with friends along side 3 other well rated Syrah's. Tried several food and chocolate samples with it. This one was a winner - best nose, perfect spice, even and smooth with a great range of overtones along side food. Highly recommend.
