Ürziger Würzgarten Auslese 48 1/2 Flasche Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Dr. Loosen 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Dr. Loosen produces only Riesling from traditional, slate-soil vineyards in the Mosel valley. A full range of Prädikat wines is made from six grand cru single-vineyard sites. The vineyards of Dr. Loosen owe their excellent quality to three major factors: the exceptional regional climate of the Middle Mosel area, the mineral-rich slate and volcanic soils, and the incredible age of the estate’s ungrafted Riesling vines. All of Dr. Loosen’s six major vineyards were designated as Erste Lage (equivalent to grand cru) in the 1868 Prussian classification of Mosel vineyards, which was undertaken for tax assessment purposes. This classification predates the grand cru system in Burgundy, and was updated by Stuart Pigott and Hugh Johnson in the Wine Atlas of Germany (1995). Wehlener Sonnenuhr (VAY-len-er ZON-en-ooer) is a precipitously steep and rocky vineyard which yields some of the most elegant and sophisticated white wines in the world. It has very thin soil and the purest blue slate of any Mosel vineyard. This gives a lively minerality to the wine, along with a delicate and crisp acidity that perfectly balances the bright white peach and lemon fruit. It’s an aristocratic and charming wine that dances gracefully on the palate.

The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. When Ernst Loosen (pronounced loh-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany’s best-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class wines. To achieve this, Ernst dramatically reduced his crop size and stopped all chemical fertilization, preferring only moderate use of organic fertilizers. And, most importantly, he turned to gentler cellar practices that allow the wine to develop its full potential with a minimum of handling and technological meddling. Read less

Hints of botrytis in the form of pungent spice and aromatic prickle, as well as an enhancement of both richness and peppy acidity mark the step to Loosen's 2008 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese from his collection of Kabinetts. Honey and vanilla ... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Riesling wine from Mosel Saar Ruwer in Germany. 2008 Doctor Loosen Riesling Spatlese Wehlener Sonnenuhr 750ml
