Spring Valley Vineyard is situated 12 miles northeast of Walla Walla, spread amid the picturesque wheat fields of southeastern Washington with the Blue Mountains providing the backdrop. The terroir demonstrates a mesoclimate that is ideally suited for growing wine grapes. The unique microclimate of Spring Valley also allows the grapes to develop their own distinct characteristics. Initially, we planted a 2 acre block of Merlot in 1993 on a south-southwest facing hillside. The vines follow the north-south slope of the hills in vertical rows. This orientation, coupled with the declination of slope, allows the vines optimal use of sunshine, air drainage, and the reflective nature of the surrounding wheat fields. Great care is taken when caring for the vineyard. Under Gaynor Derby’s direction, every grape is tended by hand, including crop thinning, leaf pulling, and harvesting, not to mention hand-burying individual canes to protect them from the cold in the winters of southeastern Washington. Today, Spring Valley Vineyard consists of 115 acres of grapevines including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Read less

Complex, expressive and deftly balanced, this Merlot-dominated blend is often the highest-rated wine from Spring Valley—and its most widely available. In 2010, a long growing season marked by a cool summer produced a wine with crisp acidity and bright fruit flavors. Winemaker Serge Laville used only estate-grown grapes from Spring Valley's 111-acre vineyard in the rolling hills northeast of Walla Walla. 2,020 cases made.

Good medium red. Aromas of strawberry, mocha and tobacco. Supple, large-scaled and soft, with a slightly aggressive warmth to its red fruit and spice flavors. Fat in the middle and a tad tart-edged on the finish, which features lush tannins and a ... Stephen Tanzers IWC.
