Umathum Zweigelt 2008
This is one of the great red estates of Burgenland and Austria, predominantly for the reds, but increasingly for sweet wines too. There are many dimensions to this estate and vineyards are scattered throughout the north east side of Lake Neusiedl, with different varieties planted on different terroirs. Umathum makes a wide range, and exports only a small proportion. But the signature grape variety has always been Zweigelt, though St Laurent is also favoured, and increasingly, Blaufränkisch - replanted on south-facing terraces overlooking the lake at Jois, and tracing its origins as a vineyard back to the 11th century. The wines have a lot of personality, particularly the Zweigelt, which has a muscular and rich fruitiness, but still a strong mineral touch.
External Reviews for Umathum Zweigelt
If anybody has been blessed by a string of great vintages, it has been Austria. Add to that, the meticulous nature of the winery and you can bet that you're going to be stunned by the wine. This bottle is complex, dry and flourishes in the glass. Full of dark berries, tannins and a good dose of minerals that will pair nicely with meat-based cuisine.
