Umathum Gelber-Roter Traminer Burgenland 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

91 points Wine & Spirits: Josef Umathum is best known for red wines, but has also devoted much energy to reviving local white varieties. This blend shows off the pleasures of both yellow and red traminer (savagnin), the wine opulent in its green-grape juiciness and tropical overtones while, at the same time, refreshing. Citrusy acidity and white-pepper spice keep it lively through the long, firm finish. A large-boned wine, it needs flavorful food to stand up to it, like seared scallops or grilled eel. (Apr 2016)

Wine-growing has always played an important role in the Umathum family history. Until the early 1970's the family delivered its harvested grapes to a cooperative, but before beginning to bottle their own wines. A method presently used by many very good vintners all over the world. Until the 1980's, the firm was producing a variety of agriculture goods. Today, wine-growing is the company's central focus, though it does still remain active in other fields. Director Josef Umathum, born 1960, has been in charge of the firm's wine-growing division since 1985. A series of very good wines in notoriously difficult vintage years, and a growing number of loyal fans, have secured Umathum a solid reputation and trust. The Umathum Wine Estate has consistently ranked as one of the best wine-growers in Austria since the early 1990's. Read less
