Umani Ronchi Marche Rosso Pelago 2011

External Review by Great Wines Direct:

Fruits of the forest, vanilla and mineral aromas, strong, developed tannins with taste sensations in harmony with the wine s full body.Owned by the Bianchi-Bernetti family for well over 50 years, Umani Ronchi has become one of Italy s most respected and go-ahead producers thanks to its championing of local wines such as Verdicchio Classico and Rosso Conero.Over the past few decades, the company s quest for ever-better quality has led it to build up an estate of some 200 hectares of vineyards - 110 hectares in Verdicchio Classico, 60 hectares in Rosso Conero and 30 hectares in Abruzzo.Grapes: 50% Montepulciano, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% MerlotMaker: Emidio FelicettiRegion: Italy / Marche / Conero IGTNotes: Impenetrable ruby red colour with purple tints. On the nose, intense, clean and refined aromas are released, spicy fragrances of coffee, black pepper, liquorice and tobacco open out on a background of grass and hay, typical of Cabernet. In the mouth, the impact is of fruits of the forest, vanilla and mineral aromas, and strong but developed tannins with taste sensations in harmony with the wine s full body.Serve: At 18-20c with red meat, game-birds and mature cheese.ABV: 14%

Since the beginning of its history, the Azienda Vinicola Umani Ronchi has distinguished itself as a great interpreter of two of the most typical wines of the Marche region, Verdicchio and Rosso Conero. Massimo Bernetti, who since the 1990s has been joined in the management of the Company by his son Michele (see photo), has created wines which are appreciated throughout the world, has renovated the vineyard stock and has refurbished the great winery at Osimo, but he is not yet satisfied and stubbornly insists on following the imperatives of a product of the highest quality. All this translates into serious work of experimental agronomy and vineyard care, and the adoption of the most advanced techniques of cultivation and vinification. n the last few years the growth of interest in the wines produced in the neighbouring region of Abruzzo led Umani Ronchi SpA in 2002 to purchase a 30 hectare holding in the Teramane hills, a designated sub-area of Doc Montepulciano d'Abruzzo which has achieved an upgrade to the prestigious appellation Docg. Here, in the picturesque farmhouse which dominates an estate well-planted with vineyards, a vinification winery is to be constructed, to join the existing ageing cellar. Read less
