Ultreia de Valtuille Raul Perez 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"The 2010 Ultreia Valtuille is produced from old-vine Mencia vineyards from the Villegas zone within the village of Valtuille. It has a very Burgundian feel to it, even if the texture is more redolent of a Crozes-Hermitage. This is a medium-bodied, ultra-elegant, mega-mineral wine, built to last, but approachable from right now. The sense of balance and harmony is amazing. A truly great wine. Some 3,500 bottles were produced. I had a preview of the just-bottled 2011 of this wine and it was closed for business, but it shows great potential and I’m looking forward to tasting it next year....96" WA 08/13

Glass-staining ruby. Powerful aromas and flavors of cherry compote, wild herbs, anise, Asian spices and potpourri, with suavely integrated oak. Ripe, lush and spicy, with no undue heaviness and strong back-end lift. The long, intensely spicy finish features very fine tannins and a sexy floral quality.

This polished red delivers dark, alluring flavors of black cherry, spiced plum, espresso and mineral. Offers light, firm tannins and well-integrated acidity, with a savory character that should match well with food. Drink now through 2016.

The 2008 Ultreia De Valtuille received the same elevage as its less expensive sibling. To say that has more of everything is a gross understatement. The complex aromatics leap from the glass; on the palate the wine is dense, rich, and velvety, and it gives true meaning to the expression “iron fist in a velvet glove.” It is an extraordinary effort that should drink well for 10–15 years, probably longer.
