A very interesting bouquet. I have read other accounts calling it earthy and dusty both of which are "on the nose" but the sweet aroma of an old library book is the only way I can describe it. I must say that sometimes I am entranced by the mere appearance of a wine and this wine is one of those, it has a remarkable warm ruby red color that you must enjoy before your first sip. Now, as with any big red let it breathe a good long while before enjoying the nice hints of cherry, chocolate and licorice with just enough fruit and tannins to give it a fine finish. The wine is 14.2% alcohol and should keep until 2015 or 2016 but it is delicious right now.

The grapes for Twomey Cellars come exclusively from the Soda Canyon Ranch in southeastern Napa Valley, where the rolling hills of volcanic soils are tightly planted with French Merlot clones selected for their low yield of small, intense berries. The shoots are trained vertically for optimal sun and air exposure. In this mild climate tempered by cool, foggy breezes, Merlot ripens slowly and develops rich black fruit character and extraordinary complexity.

Sourced from a single vineyard called the Soda Canyon Ranch, this small-production Merlot shows extraordinary complexity. Winemaker Daniel Baron learned winemaking in Bordeaux and has brought European techniques to Napa. Drink this bottle now or hold it for a few decades.

The 2004 Merlot (93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc) exhibits plenty of earth, herb, mocha, and sweet cherry and currant fruit in its ripe, oaky style. The impressive attack is followed by a dry, austere finish without the necessary depth of fruit and ... Robert Parker. A Merlot wine from California in USA. 2004 Twomey Merlot 750ml

Winemaker's Notes:

Our 2004 Twomey Merlot is an elegant, concentrated wine that balances delicacy and expression of fruit. It has a dark ruby color and a complex nose of black cherry, raspberry, violets and dark chocolate, with hints of lightly toasted bread. It offers multiple layers of cherry liqueur, toffee, chocolate and amaretto flavors, culminating in a long fruity finish. Given proper cellaring, this full-bodied Merlot will continue to give drinking pleasure until 2016.
