Twomey Merlot 00 009073 Twomey P Noir Russian River 066pk 2007
Our 2007 Twomey Merlot is a beautiful example of what this noble variety can achieve in an excellent vintage: suppleness, complexity and great expression of berry fruit. It has a dark ruby color and a nose of fresh, ripe black cherry and blackberry, dark chocolate and what the French call "torifaction", the alluring smell of roasting coffee. On the palate, it has an attack full of explosive fruit and violets prolonged by plenty of "umami", the savory fifth taste. It has a long finish, echoing berry fruit, chocolate and grainy, well-integrated tannins that promise excellent cellaring potential. This Merlot will continue to give drinking pleasure through 2022.
One bottle of three had a serious cork failure. The wine had turned to vinegar. Of course the Prince of wines replaced it, but each one thereafter had the slight background flavor of acetic acid (vinegar). Sorry, but I won't be spending on Twomey again. Spend a little more and enjoy the best, Silver Oak Napa Valley or Alexander Valley...its a far better product!
Mild oak, mango and red fruit. Creamy. Straightforward mild body
Juicy blue berries blackberries a bit herbal. Beautiful palate.
nice nose of deep red fruit and spice....big mouthfeel with smoth tannins.....long finish
Good wine for the price. Very smooth. Pair it with the Swiss Appenzeller cheese and you will LOVE the way it tastes. I believe this wine is underrated. I would give it 91+.
winemaker's notes: The 2006 Merlot is a single-vineyard wine from the Duncan family's Soda Canyon Ranch in Napa Valley. It has a dark ruby color and a nose of black cherry and dark chocolate. On the palate, it is spicy and full-bodied, with a long finish of cedar and berry fruit. Twomey Cellars
Robust aromas of dark fruits, cherry, wild game, and animal hide, with hints of cigar and cloves, decorate the nose. The palate starts thin and acerbic, broadens and tames over first hour. Flavors of wild black cherry, plum, spice and pepper intermingle, and the palate broadens with time. Best after two hours. Closes back off to predominant bitterness at 2 ½ to 3 hours. Then this mercurial wine opens and closes frequently. On the second day, there is less bitterness, better fruit.

WINEMAKER’S NOTES: Our 2010 Soda Canyon Vineyard Merlot is a vivacious wine that displays ideal ripeness from a uniquely cool California vintage. It has a dark garnet color and a complex nose of cherry liqueur, dark chocolate, pipe tobacco, lavender, cloves and hazelnut. On the palate, it has a velvety mouthfeel, a full body, beautiful acid balance and a long, juicy finish. Given proper cellaring, this wine should give drinking pleasure through 2027. NOTES FROM THE VINEYARD: 2010 was the first of two unusually cool California vintages. The spring was cool with some minor frosts and a few spring showers. June had normal temperatures, which greatly helped bloom and set. Both July and August were unusually cool, which contributed to extraordinary phenolic and color maturity. Slightly above average temperatures in September brought the crop to ideal maturity. We began harvest at Soda Canyon Vineyard on September 27th, three weeks later than normal, and ended on October 1st. - Winery COMPOSITION: 96% Merlot 4% Cabernet Franc BARRELS: French Oak 36% new 36% once-used 28% older BARREL AGING: 13 months ALCOHOL: 14.2%
When Silver Oak winery wanted to expand they purchased a prime vineyard in Southeastern Napa Valley, the Soda Canyon Ranch. They discovered that amongst the vines planted in this well-drained volcanic soil vineyard, were exceptional French clones of Merlot that exhibited distinct character and intensity. Head Winemaker Daniel Baron, having worked in Pomerol and St. Emilion, had a strong affinity for Merlot and so Twomey was born. All the grapes are sourced from this unique single vineyard, where the temperate climate brings low yields and intense black-fruit character. The winemaking is slow and deliberate. The wine is aged 16 months in French oak barrels and is hand racked in a painstaking process from barrel to barrel. This eliminates the need for filtration, creating a wine with a purity and vibrancy that’s unsurpassed. Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored the 2008 91 points saying "Made with a drop of Cabernet Franc, this Merlot is rich, smooth and bone dry. With modest alcohol, it brims with flavors of black and red currant, licorice, anise and white pepper, as well as a subtle touch of sweet, smoky new oak. the grapes come from the cool Soda Canyon area of Napa Valley, at the base of Atlas Peak."

Plum purple core with a garnet rim. The bouquet is modern, with aromas of cedar, vanilla, black cherry, boysenberry, and berry liqueur. Nice and dry, with a good bite of firm tannins, but it's a little flat in the flavor profile. Shows decent cherry, berry, herb and cedar flavors that could be more vibrant and complex. But it is elegantly structured. - S.H. Aromas of tomato leaf, cedar and cherry lead to firm, modest flavors of red currant and lead pencil. Drink now through 2016. 8,500 cases made. -TF
