Two Schramsberg Bottega del Vino Flutes Reserve and a Sparkling Wine Stopp 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

A set of two Schramsberg crystal sparkling wine flutes by Bottega del Vino in gift box with a bottle of Reserve 2001 and a sparkline wine stopper. Ground shipping is included in the price. With the holidays just around the corner we are introducing two completely new gift boxes and some superb Italians flutes. We have worked on them for many months and are delighted by the results, they really look great and make an impressive gift. Here are the details. The Schramsberg gift box is made of a substantial black cardboard with a black suede cloth foam interior. The box is 16 x 14 and bears the gold Schramsberg logo on its lid. The foam is strong enough to protect the contents of the box during shipping. The gift box will be nested inside an outer shipping carton. We are thrilled to introduce the new Schramsberg crystal sparkling wine flute. This new flute was hand crafted by Bottega del Vino Crystal in Verona Italy for Schramsberg Vineyards. The origin of the company is associated with one of Italys most famous restaurants: Bottega del Vino in Verona. The restaurant has been in business since 1890 and has a wine list which features 2,800 wines and a cellar of 130,000 bottles. Mr. Barzan, the owner of this restaurant, became frustrated with the quality of existing crystal glasses. Finding the perfect glass to enhance the dining experience of his guests became so important that he started a crystal company with the intent of making stemware that is hand-blown, lead free, ultra clear and dishwasher safe. Today he has achieved his goal and Craig Roemer our winemaker and vineyard manager was so impressed with the quality of this product that he insisted upon having our own Schramsberg flute. The flute is a single pull stem, meaning it was mouth blown as a single piece and thus there is no weak point between the bowl and the stem. Bottega del Vino Crystal is handmade using a proprietary crystal formulation that is both lead free and dishwasher safe. Indeed we found it to be perfect in weight, balance, clarity and its strength is also impressive. The safest way to wash these crystal glasses is in the dishwasher. After brushing away any heavy deposits such as lipstick, put them in the dishwasher set to the shortest cycle. Detergent is not necessary. Let the drying time run for a few minutes and finish them with a linen towel. Dry and polish the flute, inside and out. Polishing the inside leaves a small linen residue which helps with bubble formation. Always hold the bowl of the glass rather than the base while drying. Never twist the base and the bowl in opposite directions. These 8.5 ounce flutes are 10.5 inch tall and feature an elegant rendition of the Schramsberg logo on their foot. These elegant flutes enhance the experience and the enjoyment of drinking Schramsberg sparkling wine. Once you try them, we are confident you will agree with us.

Schramsberg was originally established by Jacob Schram in 1862. The hillside vineyards reminded him of those used to grow Riesling in his native Germany, and he bought the land and began his wine-making business (he had been a barber by trade). Eventually the family sold the property, and nothing much of note really happened to it until Jack and Jamie Davies bought the land in 1965. The Davies' were specifically interested in making sparkling wines, but only discovered after moving onto the land that the hot Calistoga hillsides (Calistoga is typically 5 to 15 degrees warmer than the rest of the Napa Valley) were not particularly hospitable to the two grapes essential to champagne, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They set about finding suppliers in other parts of the valley, and produced their first sparkling vintage in 1965. Widespread fame came in 1972, when President Nixon used the 1969 in his toast to China. Schramsberg has been the official sparkling wine of U.S. presidents ever since. Read less

A subtle yet complex nose that reveals layers of yeast, dried orchard fruits, peach, and hints of cinnamon spice. In the mouth this is big and rich with lots of deep fruit tones laid upon a creamy, toasty frame with spicy top notes. The finish is long and complex with layers of spicy and nutty tones. 92pts

On par with the J. Schram. Bright gold in color with strong yeast and dough in the nose. There was a lingering honey flavor that made it distinctive to me from the other Schramberg sparkling wines.
