Two Oceans Shiraz 2016

Member Review by duncan 906:

This bottle was part of a lot I bought on the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/129986.It is from the large Two Oceans concern in South Africa and made of 100% syrah/shiraz grapes sourced from five different locations with the wine spending three months in oak barrels.I started the bottle last night with my supper of pork stew.It is a fairly deep red colour and there is some blackcurant and blackberry style fruit with a suggestion of spice or pepper on the finish. However it is not as full-bodied as I expected nor as structured. In short, this is an OK wine that went well with the stew but not a patch on the better Northern Rhones.

Uninviting boquet. Overly musty taste. There are much better values in Shiraz from Australia.

Screw cap. Nose seems closed with ripe red fruits, pepper and oak with more of the same on the palate. Some sweet overtones. Medium-full bodied with crunchy, ripe tannins. Quite nice. A great value at $9.95. Would go well with lamb chops or BBQ chicken with mint chutney. Tasted Mar/2012.

I picked up this bottle just to show my wife what sort of wine a Shiraz is. She liked it enough that she wanted to try other types but did not like the Two Oceans enough to want more of this one. A good simple wine, nothing special but very economical and worth it for a quick meal.

Smoky, toasty oak aromas. Better balance in this wine between the oak and berry fruit components. Will appeal to those who like a good hit of toast up front.

Liked the smoky overtones; might seem a little heavy-handed to some (we joked about "liquid smoke") but found it quite enjoyable. Too high an alcohol content?
