Twisted Oak Verdelho Alta Mesa Silvaspoons 2006
Gold Medal, 2008 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition "On the nose I found cream, white pepper, tropical fruit, cantaloupe, peach, and flowers. The wine was very aromatic. I also loved the pale straw color of the wine. In the mouth the wine showed pineapple, peach, citrus, and melons. The wine was surprisingly crisp and very refreshing. We quaffed it on an unusually warm winter evening in the DC area, on its own, and it was perfect." - Sonadora on Wannabe Wino "a ballerina in steel-toed boots." - San Francisco Chronicle. You listening? Purity of Essence. That's what this Verdelho has. You'll never catch a Commie drinking this Verdelho. Why, Mandrake? Because it's full of exotic aromas of bananas, citrus, lilac. And, it is bursting with crisp, fresh fruit flavors of apricots and honeydew melon. Mandrake, this is the purest expression of fruit from a vineyard as you will ever taste. Drink it now, like a man!" Production Notes The Silvaspoons Vineyard is located northeast of Galt in a district known as the Alta Mesa AVA. This Portuguese white grape is an early ripener with great natural acidity reminiscent of a Sauvignon Blanc. The berries are light greenish to golden in color but the skins are quite thin, yielding a white grape juice that is almost pale straw in color. The 2006 growing season started with a wet spring. When the rain finally stopped in May, temperatures came up very fast. Early July was warm but late July gave us an extreme heat wave and many vineyards, including this one, shut down for 2 weeks. Finally, August rolled around and the weather cooled down a bit. At veraison (the technical term for the onset of berry ripening), temperatures stayed cool and the fruit ripened slowly. To achieve full maturation of fruit without sacrificing natural acidity, we harvested in mid-September. Upon reaching the winery, the fruit was whole cluster pressed to remove the clear juice from the skins and seeds. After pressing, the wine was inoculated with a Spanish yeast strain and the yeast monitored throughout fermentation to ensure optimal yeast viability. The juice was fermented in a stainless steel tank at 54 degrees. After 18 days and near the end of primary fermentation, the wine was racked off of the lees to another tank and held at a very low temperature. The wine was bottled in early December to capture the "freshness" of the fruit flavors. Gorgeous flowery, grassy nose with hints of pear and peach. Really intoxication nose with great nuance and delicateness. Wow, going on the palate lives up to the nose with great racy acidity and rich fruit. Beautiful flavors of grass, lemon, lime and more. Wow, great wine, in a screw cap, even better! 4/5 [NR]
Very good white, with soft aromas of peach and melon followed up by bright floral and citrus flavors to accompany the rounder peach/melon notes.
