Turnbull Syrah Estate Grown Oakville 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

In 2002 we continued to increase the percentage of Syrah in the blend that comes from our beautiful Blossom Creek vineyard in Calistoga. Located in the western hills at the northern-most end of the Napa Valley, BC experiences generally warmer days than our Oakville properties along with cooling nighttime breezes from the nearby Russian River Valley. The result is intensely fl avored berries with a “blacker” aromatic character than the traditional ripe red fruit personality of the same varietal grown in Oakville. My tasting notes include terms like black read more... tea, coff ee, soy, steak sauce and tar; these in handsome combination with concentrated sweet red berries, orange marmalade, cotton candy and vanilla. (Yes, believe me…this can all be insanely wonderful together! Who knew?!) Sleek on entry, this is a big mouthful of wine all wrapped up in nicely tailored French Oak. Blend: 98% Syrah, 2% Viognier Brix: 25.7˚ by weighted average Fermentation: Small open-top fermenters with manual punch-down and traditional vertical stainless steel fermenters with pump-over devices. Pressed between 5 degrees brix and dryness. Time in oak: Aged 16 months in 30% new French and American 224 and 350 liter barrels. Alcohol: 15% Production: 731 cases Vineyard % by Vineyard Harvest Dates Fortuna 60% 09/25/02-10/07/02 Weitz 29% 09/21/02 Blossom Creek 9% 10/03/02-10/07/02 Skellenger 2% 10/02/02

Turnbull:
At Turnbull Wine Cellars we craft our award-winning wine using fruit sourced from our five stellar estate vineyards in Oakville and Calistoga. This diversity of fruit sourcing and exemplary viticultural work allows our winemaking team the ability to create wines with distinctive flavors that capture the personality of each site. Soils vary from deeper alluvial fans on the valley floor to the shallow, volcanic and rocky structures of the hillsides.
