Turley Zinfandel Old Vines 2015

External Review:

Other bits and pieces from old vine parcels are co-mingled in the 2012 Zinfandel Old Vines, a delicious, up-front, medium ruby-colored Zin made with a Pinot Noir-like sensitivity. Both of these cuvees are best drunk in their first 3–4 years of life.

The winery is a family operation helmed brother and sister duo Larry and Helen Turley, founded in 1993. Their prestigious wines are in constantly high demand, and their private wine club has a two-year waiting list. The wines are produced from several vineyards, with vines dating back to the 1800s. Each terroir lends its own character to the wines, and they are given separate labels according to location each vintage. The vineyards are located in Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, Lodi, Howell Mountain and Contra Costa.  Read less

Balances bold black cherry fruit with a sleek, focused structure, offering notes of briary wild berry, smoky cracked pepper and anise. Drink now through 2021.

Good bright medium red. Tighter and less expressive on the nose than the Juvenile, hinting at a darker fruit character. More silky and fleshy in the mouth but less exuberant too, with a note of orange peel providing lift to the juicy dark berry and spice flavors. Finishes vibrant and fresh.

The 2011 Zinfandel Old Vines is a good introduction to the Turley house style. Sweet red berries, crushed flowers and licorice come together nicely in the glass. The 2011 offers lovely balance to match its pretty, understated personality. A feminine, gracious wine, it seems best suited for drinking over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2014.
