What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

From ungrafted, ancient vines planted in pure sand (Turley says it looks like a beach), there are 400 cases of the powerhouse 2002 Zinfandel Duarte Vineyard (400 cases; 16.7% alcohol). Turley 02 Old Vines Zinfandel 89-91 Points - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate: The 2002 Zinfandel Old Vines is a blend of lots that did not make the grade for the single vineyard offerings. No wimpy wine at 16.4% alcohol, it exhibits deep, jammy black fruits intermixed with saddle leather, pepper, and earth. With an unctuous texture as well as a big, chewy finish, it is a robust, mouthfilling, value-priced Zinfandel.

[Cru (by the glass): c venison p 1995 Arnaldo-Caprai Sagratino Anni 25] Tough act to follow. My palate was likely shot. Could only taste candied plum. Did not enjoy as in previous tastes.
