Turley Zinfandel California Old Vines 2007
The Zinfandel Old Vines (1000 cases;16.4% alcohol) is a blend of declassified wine from Turley's old-vine vineyards. A great buy and one of the best old-vine cuvees the Turleys have produced rich full-bodied and unctuously textured it explodes from the glass revealing black fruits earth kirsch licorice pepper and underbrush elements. Sweet (from glycerin and high alcohol not sugar) dry full-bodied concentrated hedonistic and supple it is ideal for drinking over the next 3-4 years.
I enjoyed the Turley 2007 Old Vine Zinfandel last night with dinner (April 10, 2010). It paired nicely with some highly flavorful and robustly seasoned salmon, couscous and asparagus. This Zin is beautiful - not too jammy like many zins are these days. It's appropriately spicy and peppery, with plum and berry notes interwoven giving it a lovely balance of flavors. It's great on the nose and finishes nicely, too. I would definitely want to purchase this wine again, but I'm not sure it's quite worth the money. I also hear the folks at the winery can be snobby, which is a huge turn-off to me. I mean, really...do we need to be full of ourselves?? These reasons knock this from a "5" to a "4" rating for me. But if you've had a different experience at the winery and/or if you don't mind snooty folks when you go tasting, then the wine, in and of itself, is lovely.
