Turley Wine Cellars Zinfandel California Old Vines 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

90 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): The 2015 Zinfandel Old Vines is a fabulous introduction to the Turley range. Succulent red cherry, plum, smoke, licorice, tobacco and menthol infuse this fleshy, succulent Zinfandel. All the elements are in the right place. This is an absolutely delicious wine, with plenty to recommend it, including its price. Drink: 2017-2022. (Dec 2016)

The winery is a family operation helmed brother and sister duo Larry and Helen Turley, founded in 1993. Their prestigious wines are in constantly high demand, and their private wine club has a two-year waiting list. The wines are produced from several vineyards, with vines dating back to the 1800s. Each terroir lends its own character to the wines, and they are given separate labels according to location each vintage. The vineyards are located in Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, Lodi, Howell Mountain and Contra Costa.  Read less

Red fruit on entry—more towards dried fruit than ripe, fresh fruit. However, not sweet-amplified, like you might expect. So, are you with me here? More savoriness than I would expect from a Zin. Not terribly full-bodied, but, certainly, not wimpy. Observable tannin and acid, but not over the top in either case. Good, easy to enjoy wine.

Amazingly drinkable now. A big beautiful 2009 from a great American vineyard. If you think you don't like Zins, think again. This will convert you

Had a chance to taste this wine at the most recent Zap festival and it held the top spot IMHO for most of the day. Regrettably, my notes are scant from the event and all I have is the number rating for most of my wines from that day. Guess I'll have to try it again.

91 points. The aroma is softly prune-like, with a pleasant pipe tobacco edge. There are some sweet vanilla cream tones, a touch of freshly cut rose wood, some raspberry and a hint of herbs de Provence. This is a softly profiled wine, with a delicately jammy quality. It’s bright with red fruit tones, cherry, and tart raspberry. Rose petals and a mixed floral bouquet mingle with vanilla and a subtly bitter, toasted hue. This wine strikes an exceptional balance between a dark, gripping core and bright lively acidity. I enjoyed the Turley 2007 Old Vine Zinfandel last night with dinner (April 10, 2010). It paired nicely with some highly flavorful and robustly seasoned salmon, couscous and asparagus. This Zin is beautiful - not too jammy like many zins are these days. It's appropriately spicy and peppery, with plum and berry notes interwoven giving it a lovely balance of flavors. It's great on the nose and finishes nicely, too. I would definitely want to purchase this wine again, but I'm not sure it's quite worth the money. I also hear the folks at the winery can be snobby, which is a huge turn-off to me. I mean, really...do we need to be full of ourselves?? These reasons knock this from a "5" to a "4" rating for me. But if you've had a different experience at the winery and/or if you don't mind snooty folks when you go tasting, then the wine, in and of itself, is lovely. This concentrated red is loaded with base notes of dark fruit, offering aromas of boysenberry, roasted anise and dense blackberry, with mocha, espresso and sage flavors that are wrapped in firm tannins. Drink now through 2017.

Bright, deep ruby. Classic zin aromas of blackberry, crushed black pepper and licorice. Creamy-sweet and fat, but with a sweet-tart character contributing to the wine's superb cut and purity of fruit. Complicated by an element of wild herbs. Finishes with suave tannins, solid structure and excellent length. A very successful fusion of zinfandelrsquo;s many aspects, and a terrific value.

A bit on the wild side, showing tart plum, toasty oak and roasted anise aromas, with bold flavors of cherry and cracked pepper that balance tart acidity and burly tannins. Drink now through 2012. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

The outstanding 2005 Zinfandel Old Vines, basically a blend of old vine parcels that are not big enough to be sold individually, reveals a dark plum/ruby color, oodles of sweet cherry, plum, licorice, pepper, and spicy characteristics, medium to full body, and a fleshy, generous, well-endowed personality. Enjoy it over the next 4-5 years.

Reveals a macerated, sweet jammy cherry-scented bouquet, loads of glycerin, and soft, low acid, plum/prune flavors displaying hints of balsam wood and pepper. It is a luscious Zin to enjoy over the next 5-6 years.

The 2003 Zinfandel Old Vines (1000 cases; 16.4% alcohol) is a blend of declassified wine from Turley's old-vine vineyards. A great buy and one of the best old-vine cuvees the Turleys have produced, the 2003 is as good as their finest single vineyard offerings. Rich, full-bodied, and unctuously textured, it explodes from the glass revealing black fruits, earth, kirsch, licorice, pepper, and underbrush elements. Sweet (from glycerin and high alcohol, not sugar), dry, full-bodied, concentrated, hedonistic, and supple, it is ideal for drinking over the next 3-4 years.

Slightly hazy medium red. Deeper on the nose but less vibrant and more carnal than the Juvenile, offering black cherry, minerals, black pepper, flowers and a whiff of meat. More serious but less fruity and sweet; a deeper and more structured wine but a bit drier and warmer on the back end. I preferred the Juvenile for its sweet fruit.
