Turley Petite Sirah Napa Valley Aida Vineyard 1999

Member Review by Philip James:

Iron pyrite and squid ink on the nose. Lots of sediment. The ferrite flavors continue and the wine has an iodine note. Very thick and deep still. Powerful and still robust.

The winery is a family operation helmed brother and sister duo Larry and Helen Turley, founded in 1993. Their prestigious wines are in constantly high demand, and their private wine club has a two-year waiting list. The wines are produced from several vineyards, with vines dating back to the 1800s. Each terroir lends its own character to the wines, and they are given separate labels according to location each vintage. The vineyards are located in Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, Lodi, Howell Mountain and Contra Costa.  Read less

"Rich, exotic, powerful" are all typical descriptions for Turley wines and this petite sirah certainly fits the description, benefiting from a long warm summer to produce a wine that is rather uncivilized. The historic Aida vineyard is located within the undulating hills in Napa Vally, yielding wines that preserve some acidity, dense but not overly tannic. the 1997 required cellaring 10-15 years, so it is ready to drink now, and will become more characterful in the cellar for quite a few more years.

I do not believe I have ever tasted a more concentrated, essence-like wine than Turley's 1997 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard. Made from 55-year old vines that yielded only 9.8 tons of fruit for five acres, this opaque black-colored wine is the biggest, ... Robert Parker. Wine Advocate ReviewTurley continues to offer two of the blackest, densest, richest Petite Syrahs ever produced in California. Alongside its siblings, the 1996 Petite Syrah Aida Vineyard looks like a wimp with only 13.8% alcohol, but what concentration and intensity this wine offers. From a 4.5-acre vineyard, only 3 tons of fruit were harvested in 1996. The result is an opaque purple-colored wine with a dense, mineral, earthy, peppery, blackberry-scented nose, huge, ripe, thick flavors, gobs of glycerin and fruit, and a long, moderately tannic finish. My guess is that this wine requires 5-6 years of cellaring, and will keep for 2-3 decades.

The opaque black/purple-colored 1995 Petite Syrah Aida Vineyard offers up a licorice, smoke, earth, and cassis-scented nose, extraordinary sweetness of fruit, and monstrous-sized proportions of glycerin and tannin. The 1994 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard is the new reference point for Petite Syrah. At 14.9% alcohol, this dry, awesomely endowed wine is not shy about displaying its virtues.
